Denver Stiffs

Denver Nuggets quarter season (movie) review: Part 1

Believe it or not, after just 17 games the Nuggets (12-5) are already 25.7% of the way through the 2011-12 season. If things were to end today, George Karl and his team would be the No. 2 seed out West and facing the Memphis Grizzlies in Round One of the playoffs. Let's take a look at how we're feeling about the individuals who make up this team ...

Star-divide

I think we have all come to love my love for terrible movies ... well, what better way to evaluate this team than by comparing individuals to some of my favorite films. I'll be breaking this up into three parts to run over the next three days. Let's see how this adventure turns out ...

The Big Men:

Nene is the Nuggets' Anchorman.

Nene Hilario: 13.4 points per game / 9.1 rebounds / 1.0 blocks - Anchorman, 2004
Nene remains Denver's best big man and most reliable post player on the offensive end. Like Ron Burgundy, Nene is the guy that the team has been rallying around in the post, but also like the movie ... many of the characters (Nene's teammates) have had their moments to shine, as well. While, Anchorman is starting to become a little dated by time, like Nene, it's still a classic and can bring you much joy. The Brazilian discussed wanting to be a better rebounder at his re-signing press conference and he hasn't disappointed. Nene has posted 8+ rebounds in nine of his 13 games and double-digit boards in four contests.

Mozgov Militia coming ...

Timofey Mozgov: 5.6 points per game / 4.3 rebounds / 0.9 blocks - Training Day, 2001
Moz's up-and-down season reminds me quite a bit of Jake Hoyt's experience dealing with Alonzo Harris and his narcotics division. Learning the job (center) on the fly while being in the line of fire (players attacking the lane). Mozgov is only averaging 17.8 minutes per game this season, but unlike the movie ... George Karl is proving to be on Moz's team, and not trying to harm him like Alonzo did to Jake. When Moz averages 6+ shots per game, he averages 9.1 ppg ... the problem, he has only done so six times this season. I am liking how Moz's teammates are looking for him more and getting him involved with the offense. He has shown an ability to finish on the fast-break, has some nice post moves, and can hit jumpers out to 17-feet with ease. I love watching Moz progress and I love the movie Training Day!

Kosta Koufos' season hasn't been a horror show.

Kosta Koufos: 3.5 points per game / 3.6 rebounds / 0.5 blocks - 28 Days Later, 2002
While Koufos' game doesn't resemble a horror movie, his playing time sure does. K2, as he's known, has recorded six Did Not Play - Coach's Decisions this season, yet he has also played more than 15-minutes a game in four contests. When Koufos gets more than 15-minutes per game he's averaging 7 points and 7 rebounds, but for some reason his minutes are inconsistent and that confuses and frustrates many in Nuggets Nation. Like Mozgov, Koufos has some nice post moves and soft touch around the rim, but he also is a black-hole in the post and likes to shoot every time he touches the ball (the anti-Nene if you will). He has been a bit soft taking the ball to the rim at times and this has resulted in getting his shot blocked on more than one occasion. Like the title suggests, we may see Koufos in the rotation again, especially with Chris Andersen's decline, but let's hope it doesn't take four weeks!

The old gun slinger, Chris Andersen must learn new tricks.

Chris Andersen: 4.5 points per game / 4.1 rebounds / 1.0 blocks - Unforgiven, 1992
The Birdman has seen better days, just like Will Munny. For years, Birdman has relied on his athleticism and conditioning to turn him into one of the best energy players off the bench. The 33 year-old Bird has seen some of what made him a unique player begin to disappear on him. Munny, the old gun-fighter found that his better days were behind him, but he had to "dig in" one last time and rely on his old instincts to see him through one last fight. Andersen finds himself the old man among the Denver big men and is trying to figure out a way to stay in Karl's rotation. Bird has played less than 10 minutes eight times in 17 games and has recorded two DNP-CDs. The Bird has had a few turn back the clock games this season; like his 12 points and 9 rebounds against the Lakers, 9 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocks against the Nets, and his 8 point effort against the 76ers where his second quarter helped the Nuggets get back into that game. The Nuggets are 3-0 in those contests, but the Birdman of old is starting to look more like the old Munny, but never count out an old gun-fighter.

The wrap: The Denver big men have been big reasons for some Denver wins and yet the playing time of Mozgov, Koufos, and Birdman have been inconsistent at best. Moz has been the man getting the trust of Karl as the season wears on and it has a lot to do with the fact that Moz is at least on the floor to start games. The Nuggets have relied on Nene in the middle more than I would like, but it has led to a 12-5 record.

The depth of the Nuggets was supposed to be a huge factor this season, and for the guards and forwards they have seen ample playing time. When Nene has been able to play (13 of 17 games) he has played quite a bit, averaging 31.2 minutes per game - more than last season's 30.5 mpg - and could wear down as this grueling season progresses. A nagging heel injury has plagued Nene this season and it likely wont just magically go away. Even though the Nuggets like to play small, at some point they will need Nene, Mozgov, Koufos, and Andersen more than they are being used now.

My confidence in Nene is as high as it has ever been. Mozgov's progression might seem slow to some, but learning to play in the NBA for a big guy isn't an easy task. Moz is showing signs of being a solid contributor to the team and looks to be coming along nicely. Koufos needs more playing time to get the kinks worked out of his game, but it's hard to give bigger minutes to a young guy when the team is looking like a top seed out West. Andersen has the trust of his coach, but it is fading a bit. Karl likes to play small-ball and this group is most effected by that, but the Denver big men have been solid.

Anchorman was GOOD though

“Fare Thee Well Baxter, you will always be friend of the Bears..”

And ... Unforgiven

is totally one of the best westerns ever. A fantastic movie all the way around. A masterpiece. Eastwood’s swan song and love letter to the genre he helped define.

Poor Andersen. It sucks getting older.

but nene is NOT a forward

it is okay to let him think he is one. it has been working so far.

Ummm...disagree.

Why do you think he’s not a forward? He is a serviceable at the Center position, but has the chance to be very good to excellent at power forward.

i think he means Nene still plays a lot of minutes at Center.
he cannot defend the perimeter or the pick and roll

the advantage he has at center is he can out run the other centers. at forward he becomes less effective the farther away from the basket he gets. good guy, nice player but the kind of money he now makes he should average 20 points and 10 rebounds per game. cannot board away from the basket.

I am gonna disagree on your defensive points.

He has excellent feet, hedges well, and some of the quickest hands I’ve ever seen for a big man. Now, I will give you that his intensity is not always where we’d like to see it, but he has the tools. We seem to forget that he has been playing out of position since Camby left, and thus is basically having to retrain his defensive instincts.

agree he has all the tools

he just does not know how to use them. lack of basketball IQ. do not get me wrong he is NOT stupid. he started out as a soccer player and is from brazil. if he playe college ball in the united states he would be a hall of famer. kmart was the best pick and roll defender to ever play the game.

Are you kidding me?

Nene is one of the best at defending the pick and roll.

CB, I disagree...

When Nene’s man sets the pick he only steps out to drive the ballhandler back about 10% of the time. D. Williams constantly abused the Nuggets when he was with the Jazz by running the P&R with the man Nene was on and attacking the paint.

Plus, Karl should fine him every time he lays it up or finger rolls when he drives.

I love Nene, but he frustrates me to no end.

Training Day and Unforgiven look Good!

I have an obsession with the old west, cowboys and stuff so I might have to watch that one.

Anyway to the Nuggets… I’ve been really impressed by our two starters this season. Nene is looking more aggressive on the boards and that shows in the stats. Mozgov is growing before our eyes and improving every game, he really does have the potential to be something special. As for Bird, he is having his good and bad games. But apart from him jumping for every pump fake and questionable D at times he has actually improved his shot, especially at the line. I would prefer K2 to take Birds minutes though. (In a perfect world, I would have Faried). Overall a good start by our Bigs, excited to watch Mozzie grow!

if you have an obsession with the old west

may I recommend Hell on Wheels and/or Deadwood. Two great shows.

Agreed, NugNugz. Deadwood is one of the best cable dramas ever produced,

If foul language, whores, gambling, coldblooded murder, heavy drinking, or morphine addiction bother you, however, it’s probably not a series for you.

I saw a commercial for Hell on Wheels and it seemed like they’re trying to ride on the coattails of Deadwood. Is it as good?

Deadwood was phenomenal...

I’ll never forgive HBO for allowing it to end in favor of “John from Cincinnati” …

Pretty sure they cancelled it because no one watched

I was excited for it, and wanted it to succeed, as it was following Tony being killed in Sopranos, but it just wasn’t that interesting. It couldn’t hold my attention. Something was missing.

I loved Deadwood

The violence was crazy. That huge fight between Dan Dority and The Captain was insane. If you have never seen it, Google it…epic fight.

I actually cancelled HBO after JFC.

that fight was so great

watched it like 15 times.

Man, you don’t like Will or Deadwood? At least we both like the Nuggets! Right? RIGHT?!?

I tried to like Deadwood

It just didn’t do it for me. It was like a girl I once knew who was cute and fun to hang out with, but for some reason there was no attraction for either of us. On paper, we were a perfect match. In person, just sort of there.

If you want to talk

Top Gear, Dr. Who, or SG1 I’m your man.

Love t
fail...Love Top Gear

Original British version, not the wannabe US one.

the british version

is damn good and the american verson sucks ass … usually its the other way around

YES!!!

My girlfriend and I tried to watch ‘John from Cincinnati’ last week and that ended with us nearly heaving our TV out the front window onto the sidewalk. I can’t believe that was the same man responsible for Deadwood. They should lock that guy in a room and feed him nothing but pizza and pancakes until he cranks out a contintuation of Deadwood. A couple years ago I heard they were making a feature length ‘episode’ of Deadwood to tie up loose ends. Did this ever happen? If so, what was the critical consensus?

Yeah check this article out: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/11/arts/television/11mcki.html?pagewanted=all

In mid-May, even as the promotional push for the new season began, word leaked that HBO was going to forgo a fourth season, after it had promised Mr. Milch only six episodes (the usual is 12) and Mr. Milch passed. Chris Albrecht, the chairman of HBO, said the decision was a complicated one. He and Carolyn Strauss, the president of HBO’s entertainment division, had attended a meeting with Mr. Milch about his next show, “John From Cincinnati,” about surfers living on the polluted border between California and Mexico. The meeting, in Mr. Albrecht’s Los Angeles office — a secluded suite decorated with New York Yankees memorabilia and a “Sopranos” pinball machine — was dominated by Mr. Milch reading aloud from the pilot script for “John,” which thrilled Mr. Albrecht and Ms. Strauss.

I believe negotiations for the four ’sode thing fell apart.

And now that Timothy Olyphant is doing "Justified"

and Ian McShane is onto other things, I don’t see a movie happening either…:(

OH! I just had a thought

Starz might have been a good home for a Deadwood restart. It loves swearing and sex etc etc. If they renew Torchwood and added Deadwood on what a happy chica I would be.

I liked their version of Torchwood a lot

though a little uncomfortable with them americanizing it.

Did you?

I was mostly happy with it until the very last 10 seconds. I wanted to kill it after that. But I’m over it now and just want another season. I thought John Barrowman did some of his best work in it this season, especially in Ep 7. Not being snarky, I thought he was just terrific throughout that episode.

Which one was episode 7?

Did you see the Christmas Special yet?

“Immortal Sins” with Angelo

I did. I didn’t care for it very much. Was disappointed

Thanks!

Just makes me sad for what could have been. I’m not a big TV person, but the discontinuation of Deadwood was a real letdown.

So Say We All

But happily I still get TO on my screen in a Stetson

awwww yeahhhhh

I also own a Stetson

Great investment

Well the fragrance is not so great...

Oh…wait…never mind :)

Hell on Wheels is excellent

I got into Deadwood through Hell on Wheels and I can’t disagree with your statement on riding the coattails.

The main character in Hell on Wheels is an ex-confederate soldier which adds an interesting angle (should I as the viewer, empathize with a former plantation owner because he was wronged in another aspect?). Race factors in much more prominently in Hell on Wheels which is something I like. The character mentioned above is now the foreman for a group of former slaves who have now been tasked with building the railroad. This leads to uneasy moments and alliances that are often missing in the history books. Indigenous populations of the Plains are well represented too. I highly recommend it.

of course the best show of all time would have to be The Wire.

Hell on Wheels...so disappointed.

I found it quite boring and couldn’t make it past the first few episodes.

Deadwood is awesome

And for the record I'm not an ADD person with shows, I can totally stick with something that builds i.e. Rubicon

but I just found nothing interesting about Hell on Wheels at all. The lead actor seemed like NotJoshBrolin.

oh this might be the first rift in our relationship

While slow at the beginning, Hell on Wheels really picked up. The dynamic between the lead character and Common got super interesting.

Sons of Anarchy is also very good

Although it is pretty tame compared to DW.

I like SoA for the first two seasons...

now I’m just tired of it. I keep hoping Jax will stop mumbling all his lines. I don’t think it’s that tame. Less swearing …more violence IMO and not nearly as artsy.

Last season started out lame

..then it picked up steam. It has one more season left in it.

Dexter…Ot, was awesome, and is now nearly unwatchable. The last season was terrible.

Hmmm....

Maybe I’ll check it out again on demand or something. I didn’t like Colm Meany here at all, and I like him typically. I thought he was to OTT as the villainous guy.

and by OTT you mean...?
Over The Top
ahh wow i probably never would've guess that meaning

I don’t see him as particularly villainous. Isn’t he more complex than that?

Are we talking about the

the man that runs the place? I’d say he’s pretty villainous.

ahh okay I was talking about the ex-confederate

yeah the man that runs the place is fairly villainous, though we all have our origin stories.

The ex confederate is NotJoshBrolin right?

If so, he’s okay, but he’s no Josh Brolin and maybe that is part of my problem with him :D

I'm not always so good with names, but I believe this is the case.
Game of Thrones
Really enjoyed the first season,

but the books are sooooo much better (big surprise there, I know)

Books are always better

They have so much more detail and background that you can’t get in a show. The show does have nudity though.

yes...quite a lot of it :)
I like the guy with the white hair

He’s very good.

He's sure to die soon

as it appears everyone is on that show. I haven’t read the books, so it is fun not knowing what will happen. My favorite is Tyrion Lannister.

If you liked the series,

you should seriously read the books. But, wait a couple more years. I just finished the most recent book of the series, and I know I’m gonna have to wait an eternity before the next one. :-/

I've only watched a couple of episodes

The first one and the last one. LOL

But I remember the guy that plays the one with the white hair was in Son of Mine in Doctor Who. And of course Sean Bean….

*was Son-of-Mine
Oh, and Tyrion is awesome
4 great movies!

the write up was not bad either :)

Nice analysis

At the beginning of the season, Mozgov didnt live up to the (high) expectations i had. But maybe this was just the transition to the NBA from Europe. I was already questioning if Koufos wasnt a better choice for the starting C spot (especially after the 3 game stretch MIL-SAC-@NOH), but in the last games Mozgov has really shown why George Karl held on to him. Solid D, efficient scoring. I hope that he got a lot of confidence with his performance in NY, one of my highlights was his block on Melo (rising majestically © Clyde).

As for Birdman, it really breaks my heart to watch his decline as he is still one of my favourite players and i hope he’ll get out of his slump, but at the moment I would rather see Faried get some minutes instead of Bird.

I am very happy that Nene has improved his rebounding this year, I hope this trend continues, it would be great to see him average 15 and 10 in addition to being our best post defender and one of the best passing big men in the league.

All in all I am pleased with our big men, and I hope Moz/Kouf are developing their game further this season, so that Karl can leave Nene at the PF position.

I would bet Bird sees the writing on the wall...

… Hope he handles it professionally as his minutes drop and K2s minutes rise.

I don't get all the Stiffs love for KK

I couldn’t disagree more that he has a “soft touch around the rim.” The guy misses bunnies and layups constantly. He’s not big enough or athletic enough to defend above average centers. He shouldn’t be getting more than 8-10 mins a night (if that). I’d much rather see Bird out there.

7' 256 lbs listed

He’s big enough, and to me, he seems more coordinated than Mozgov, although Moz’s recent play has been looking nice. I think K2 definitely needs to learn a lot about playing C in the NBA, but he’s aggressive and tall which is nice. Bird is more seasoned, but I think many are tired of him biting on head fakes, and I don’t think he can get up nearly as high or explosively as he did 2-3 years ago.

Koufos has legitimate post moves.

Having Bird in is like playing 4 on 5 on offense.

?

I’m definitely more in the K2 camp than Bird’s, but this isn’t true. Bird and Andre have been running the pick and roll with some success. And his turn-around jumper isn’t terrible.

But he’ll always be a player who excels in transition, getting up the floor fast for open dunks. I say “always” even though age has significantly impacted this part of his game.

K2 has none of the flash that Bird has. On defense, he’ll probably never bring the crowd to its feet with a volleyball spike blocked shot, but he’ll never give up an uncontested basket, either, as he won’t be easily baited off his feet.

It’s hard to really get excited about Koufus, but when you think about the Nuggets string of back-up centers: Francisco Elson, Johann Petro, etc., Koufus is pretty darn decent and can and should contribute a solid 5-15 minutes per night.

Speaking of volleyball spike blocked shot....

was Moz’s rejection of Melo’s layup sweet, and a reason for optimism about our Timofey?

Kouf, good backup to have - I agree.

FG% this season:
Koufos: 55.2%
Mozgov: 52.1%
Birdman: 51.2%

It wouldn’t appear that Koufos is missing as many bunnies and such as some may think…

As far as I've seen (and to be fair, I've only caught about half the games so far)

KK takes way fewer shots outside of 6’ than Bird or Moz. His FG% should be higher than theirs and in fact should be higher than it is. Of course it’s also reasonable to say Bird should stop shooting jumpers but that’s a second argument. Frankly from what I’ve seen I just don’t like KK on the offensive end of the floor at all. On defense he may be more steady than Bird and less likely to fall for the head fake but he also gets pushed around more.

He's also young, with upside and room for improvement.

Bird is only going to get worse, or at best tread water until the end of the season. Mother nature is a harsh mistress. Bird will be out of the league by next season.

Oh man I totally agree with you

It is 2009, right?

I agree

Sure if you have to split up minutes between Koufos and Birdman, I agree Koufos is giving more energy and better results. But if you’re looking to put minutes somewhere, I say you just give more to Mozgov. No question he has the most upside and actual potential to be a good center in this league.

Bakers dozen...

Can George please stop being so stubborn and give in to what he already knows. Bench Bird and give Faried some minutes

I'm pretty sure it is just a plan

To save the rookie for a breakout second half of the season and playoff run.

Not even Karl can contain Faried an entire season.

Man, I hope your right

That would be awesome, and certainly beat being forced into it via injuries.

Besides, GK likes playing small ball, and the Manimal is undersized for his position, so it should work. Just gotta get GK to get over the rookie thing.

If Manimal played every night

he would be the front runner for the ROY. Karl wants the come from behind victory. We are going for 3 awards this year: Harrington for most improved and 6th man, then Manimal for ROY

I think it's too early to proclaim that for Manimal

there is a bit of SSS at work here.

How anyone was ever convinced to give Will Ferrell

a lead role in a movie is beyond me. He’s a one trick pony. A character actor who can be usefull in small increments. After about 30 seconds, his “Look at me, I’m overacting man” routine is boring.

The movie where he was a socially stunted IRS guy auditing Maggie Gyllenhall

where Ferrell played it straight was actually quite good. The movie was his equivalent of “the Truman Show” for his career.

Stranger Than Fiction?
Agree he was very good in that.
and the ABA movie was pretty funny too. Better than Anchorman, I thought...

… though Anchorman’s scenes play well on youtube in small bits.

Never saw the ABA one

but on Anchorman, exactly. It’s a series of SNL skits stitched together with some bad writing. Seeing someone shout about LIVING IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER for a few seconds every couple of weeks can be entertaining. Having someone shout about LIVING IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER, over and over for an hour and a half: boring.

Though they seem to have a bit more plot

Judd Apatow movies strike me as similar. Basically, the camera starts rolling and they just riff until they get something that makes them laugh. Repeat this process for every scene. Must be a bitch to edit.

His routine is boring?

To you perhaps, because I completely disagree with you my good man.

But you readlily admit you like bad movies.

It’s like saying you think Twinkies are fine cuisine, then disagreeing when someone points out that they are like eating Styrofoam.

haha! True True man! True True.

Ok, so tell me a good comedy that I should watch – just to get a feel for what you do think is good!

Go to Hulu and look up "Misfits"

you can thank me later

Will do

‘Misfits’ + ‘sketch comedy’ better equal a Glenn Danzig biopic… God that man takes himself WAY to serious.

what's not to take serious

about a life filled with vague demonology and strippers?

Wait which part was vague….the strippers or the demonology :D

Comedy movies?

Dodgeball. That football movie with Keanu reeves. Monty Python. Princess Bride. The one where that guy pretends to be a knight and they play rock music while jousting.

LOVE The Replacements

I watch that stupid movie every time I see it on TNT.

unnecessary roughness!

Scott Bakula!

OMG

Heath Ledger, “A Knight’s Tale” I adore that move too. Any Monty Python!

If you can dodge a wrench.

You can dodge a ball.

Classic movie.

The American Dodgeball Association of America

Pretty sure some of the Republican candidates got their platforms from that movie. Just mention America as often as possible!

Also

Harold and Kumar, Bill and Teds which is a bit dated at this point, and the early Michael Myers stuff.

Oh yes to all of this
Can't leave out

Super Troopers

Planes Trains and Automobiles,

Corny ending, but otherwise my favorite comedy. Meet the Parents. Wedding Crashers up until they leave the mansion 2/3rds through the movie.

An excellent comedy movie is probably the hardest to make. This genre should get more Academy awards if someone is able to keep you laughing and entertained for up to two hours.

step brothers

is a masterpiece.

he had the craziest look in his eyes

and at one point he said, “Let’s get it on”

will ferrell will NEVER overact jim carrey
Jim Carrey can rein it in with the right part.
This is the first time I have ever seen Kizla

Write positively about the Nuggets two times in a row.
He has pretty much called Ty and Gallo the future faces of the Nuggets. And though there are some negatives in the article, I have need seen Kizla so positive about the Nuggets before.
Did someone put powder blue kool aid in his office? Is this a good sign of things to come for the Nuggets?? It is Kizla for christsake, the one who purposely writes controversial stuff. Even this guy is getting swayed, I am getting worried.

All that's left is for the RMC crew

To accept that we have the stars we need right now and not have their vendetta against Ujiri.
If that happens, the world may truly come to an end in 2012

Haha! Casting judgment too early either way can surely come back to haunt folks. But until the Nuggets have playoff success, the RMC guys’ point (at least Jeremy and Charlie) will still be valid.

Well Moz and Nene's success will help

Turn even the grouches (RMC and Kizla) into happy people.
I agree playoff success should be the watermark, but I had to note it cause I haven’t seen it in a decade.

Jeremy's most recent article is much more, um, forgiving of the lack of a "superstar"

He’s finally seeing the light…

What does this have to do with how the Nuggets bigs are playing?
George Karl, overheard talking to Mozgov in the locker room
Didn’t know you liked to get wet, dog.

Informative and fun post as always, Nate. Thanks!

Though we may not all agree with GK’s implementation of our newfound depth at the five, it’s refreshing to have some height and beef with at least average talent levels. With that said, I agree with other Stiffs that think an upgrade at center is the greatest personnel need to get the Nugs ‘Over the Top.’ Does anyone think Mr. Ujiri has plans to bring in a more talented big man to compliment Nene at the four, at the expense of cap room and our current glut of bench talent?

“Haha, virgin lungs … man up now!”

Any time a post references “Over the Top” I’m on board! Wonder if Hochman has watched the copy he won on my podcast?

I also wonder if Denver will try to make a move to solidify the center position. Chris Kaman is on the last year of his deal and could/should be had for the right price with the Hornets. He’s definitely more polished than Moz right now on the offensive end, but with any big man available … there will be drawbacks of course. Either having to give up a lot of talent or having to take a guy with a fat contract or a hole in his game. Guys don’t get traded for no reason … unless it’s D12.

I'm fine with Moz

He is getting better every day. I don’t see the rush to trade a young talented piece unless you are getting someone like the aforementioned D12 in return…which ain’t happening in Denver

look how long it took nene to develop

moz and k2 have big upside. they are only beginning to scratch the surface. the is no substitue for playing time in the nba.

Artimus, I half-agree

I always like your opinions – I just think we MAY have something with Mozgov. I honestly think what would put us “over the top,” and please don’t excommunicate me for this, but I want a young shooting guard with upside from this next draft (a team-oriented one of course).

In case Rudy leaves?

Because Hamilton should fit our reserve wing position well once he gets more PT.

I hope you're right.

Big fan of J-Ham, went to all his games in college. Just don’t know if he’s got the potential to compete with the many great SG’s in the game right now.

Let me clarify

I think Afflalo is a perfect 6th man for an “over-the-top” team. But by position, his upside is by the far the most overmatched by opposing teams. There’s no free agent that we can sign that will be of better value than him, but my vote would be to get value for W-Chandler, move up in the draft (trade our 1st rounder), and get a promising SG, who will eventually develop with Ty, Gallo, Nene and Moz.

But to be honest

If AAA improves his defense and turns into a lockdown defender and the other guys improve offensively, we will be fine.
I mean the Spurs won with Bowen, AAA can fill that role.
Lawson would be like Parker and Nene could be like an older version of Duncan. Gallinari would be like Ginobili but is starting.
Plus our bench with Fernandez, big Al, Brewer, Dre, and hopefully Faried/ Koufus to make our bench stronger than those SA teams!

I should say Moz/ Nene

Would combine to be Nene. Those old Spurs teams had a fill in at the center position. Hell Francisco Elson would never be a starting center for a championship team on any other team. Duncan was that good.
So I will say the combo of an improved Moz/ Nene can be as good as an older Duncan.

Credit must be given to Popovich and Karl < Popovich
Thanks, I usually just gum up the threads with banal cultural zingers
Koufos deserves more minutes

Bird needs to play backup PF instead of backup center….

Mozgov is still rusty, and has a hard time dunking the ball. Good god man, treat that like a perogi and dunk that shit!

Nice article, Nate!

BTW, you’re article is linked from the ESPN Nuggets page. Congrats!

In other news, Unforgiven and Training Day are excellent. Anchorman is fun for what it is. And the Wizards fired Flip Saunders.

Nugs cost another coach his job...ouch
Damn, what is that, three or four coaching jobs in as many years?

We will have to start calling GK, The Terminator...evil George lives.
George Karl's 7 man rotation

The Knicks win was a classic… But will it reinforce George’s uptight shrinking rotations in big games, which to my mind is the main reason for his playoff coaching struggles. The 3 non injured guys available were Koufos, Faried, and Bird. (and JStone…rook) So if these guys had played some, it’s a tough thing to read, would we have won in regulation with Fresh Legs? Or would we have lost in regulation? Who knows.
My thing is I have never liked George’s playoff big game tight rotations…over time it Wears Guys Out, especiaaly in a 7 game series. And with our depth, I think it’s a waste of talent and weapons. What do you think?

NY game

GK by way of Hastings said that the plan leading up to the game was that they were going to see how Moz was doing, and if he was playing well, they would keep him in longer at the expense of Bird/K2. Hastings believes this meant Bird knew that he may not get minutes in that game. Since Moz was playing well, GK did not put in Bird or K2 at center. The other option is that they could’ve come in at the 4 instead, alongside Moz, but I don’t personally think GK trusted Bird/K2 w/ Moz or Big Al in a tight game, thus a long game for Nene.

As far as Faried goes, also by way of Hastings, apparently GK feels that Faried needs more training to be able to play at an NBA level. Hastings says it’s worth the wait to have Faried learn the game right.

It is worth the wait

I’m pretty confident that we will see Kenneth get some burn late in the season / playoffs.

As much as I want to see the kid play, I am trusting Karl on this.

Trust Karl?

The incidents of praise for and trust in Karl are skyrocketing here on DS. I believe I’ve seen three or four in the last week alone!

About J. Stone..

I think that he would make a perfect backup point guard to Ty Lawson once Andre Miller retires/leaves. He has a lot of potential and is smart.

Respectfully Disagree on Faried

I think he would be a plus contributor in a Ryan Bowen type role. An off the bench boost of energy and athleticism, and I think 10-12 min a game would accelerate his development, and increase his comfort level, and give him experience while he is helping us win.

AAnchorman was the greatest movie ever made
don't mess with a streak

By trying to develop rookies, especially in tight games and a regular rotation still trying to grow into their roles. They won 4 in a row on the ROAD, its pointless to dwell on who didn’t play. Their time will come, we need to be a little more patient. If the injuries they have now were to the bigs also it would be a different story, then Coach Karl would have been forced to play them as he couldn’t have gone small.
