Denver Stiffs

Lawson injury means opportunity for Stone

Julyan Stone stood out while at UTEP and he's earned a spot to shine for the Nuggets.

David Crenshaw - AP

Julyan Stone stood out while at UTEP and he's earned a spot to shine for the Nuggets.

Nuggets point guard Ty Lawson has joined the ranks of the walking wounded in Denver. As the team gets set to face the 6-13 Toronto Raptors tonight, Denver could be without two starters, one key bench member, and a reserve. What should George Karl do with his rotations?

Star-divide

Take a look at the Nuggets injury list:

ARRON AFLALO – Right groin strain. Day-to-day. Doubtful for tomorrow vs. TOR.

DeMARRE CARROLL – Left hamstring strain. Day-today. Game-time decision.

RUDY FERNANDEZ – Right Achilles tendon strain. Dayto-day. Game-time decision.

TY LAWSON – Left ankle sprain. Day-to-day. Doubtful for tomorrow vs. TOR.

Afflalo has missed the past two games,. Carroll hasn't seen game action for the past eight contests. Fernandez suffered his injury Jan. 15th against the Utah Jazz, missed the following two games, came back and played just 12 minutes against the Wizards on Jan. 20th, and has now missed two more games. And now Lawson looks to perhaps miss his second game of the season, after sitting out the Jan. 11th contest against the Nets.

Injuries can be a bad thing and if none are too serious, they can sometimes be a good thing too. The Nuggets need to get some of their reserves important minutes and some of their key players more minutes as well. These injuries will allow Karl to tinker even more with his lineups and hopefully find some combinations that can work at various times during this fast-paced season.

Against the Kings, the Nuggets emptied their bench and Karl played all three Nuggets rookies. It's sort of crazy to think that the Nuggets have three rookies on the young roster. Jordan Hamilton, Kenneth Faried, and Julyan Stone all saw a little action against the Kings.

Stone, who played 20 minutes in Sacramento, will benefit the most if Lawson sits out tonight. With Fernandez also out, Karl will have no choice other than to turn the backup point guard duties over to the rookie out of the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP).

Stone has appeared in three games this season. Back on Jan. 11th Karl had an opportunity to use Stone a bit as the backup point guard as Lawson sat out. The Rook only played 6 minutes as Karl leaned Andre Miller for 38 minutes and Fernandez for 28 minutes for his point guard minutes, in what turned out to be a closer than comfortable game against the now 6-13 squad from Jersey.

But tonight could be different. If Lawson is unable to go, we should get an extended look at the kid out of UTEP. Stone was an undrafted rookie and I've liked what we've seen out of him thus far. He gives tremendous effort on defense and has nice court vision for setting up his teammates.

I'm most interested to see what Stone will do with Miller on the bench. Against the Kings, he was passed the ball a of times right after he got it. But once the reserves all entered the game, Stone seemed more at ease and started running the show on the floor.

Who is Julyan Stone? Well, he's a former four-year collegiate player who broke Tim Hardaway's assist record with the Miners, he's not known for being much of a scorer but more of a passer, a hard working defender, and a long point guard who goes 6'6''-6'7'' and 200 pounds ... consider that Afflalo goes 6'5'' and 215 pounds.

I pulled this from his Wikipedia page:

As a senior, Stone finished the season averaging 8.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. In an article about the Legends Classic, a regular season tournament that UTEP participated in, Sports Illustrated writer Seth Davis commented that, "I also liked what I saw out of 6-7 senior point guard Julyan Stone, though I'm mystified as to why he has not developed more of an offensive game. If he did, he'd be a surefire pro." On February 5, 2011, in a conference game against the Rice Owls, Stone recorded a career-high 23 points, making 7-9 shots and 9-10 free throws. After the game, Rice head coach Ben Braun said that his team, "let Stone get to the rim and he made big plays." In his final career game at UTEP, Stone recorded one assist, which brought his career total to 714, the most in UTEP and Conference USA history by a single player. He was later named to the Conference USA All-Defensive team for a second straight season, as well as the Conference USA All-Conference second team.

I'm excited to see what this rookie can do with another opportunity tonight.

First!

And I, for one, cannot wait to see Stone get some burn tonight, assuming I can avoid the ER again, which is iffy at best as of right now

I've seen your references to your illness in prior threads...

What’s ailing you? In any event, get better.

As for the game, it’s going to be important for us to get our home mojo back tonight against a mediocre team, or being a worse home team than road team issue will get in our fragile little heads and might become a problem.

No idea whats going on

Doctors said a 24 hour bug, but whatever it is, its kicking my ass. I put the pain from right now up there with crushing 4 discs in my back last year.

Feels like

I am right there with you

sitting on an airplane over the weekend has put my knee into a state of protest. I could barely walk yesterday.

Just got over it

Ugh. Mind-bending sinus pressure. Get well.

I'm sorry to hear that

Think it could be something just now taking over your guts from something you ate abroad?

Didn't travel yet

Family emergency took priority

Crap, I forgot about that, too

You can’t seem to catch a break lately! I hope you can get some positive resolution soon

undrafted

so I don’t watch college hoops and i’m pretty clueless when it comes to the draft. why does someone like Stone not get picked up if he has the potential that apparently the Nuggets see?

No doubt....

a 6’7" point guard who sets a school record (said school with a decent basketball tradition) and is on all conference defensive teams, and he doesn’t get a sniff in the draft? He’s like the Nuggets version of Broncos CB Chris Harris.

Love Chris Harris! With only two rounds in the NBA draft, there is always an abundance of guys who go undrafted. But it really seems as though the Nuggets may have a diamond in the rough on their hands.

I just hope it works out better than Julius Hodge.

We never really got to see what he could do,

but first impressions seem to me to indicate that Stone has more game than Hodge could ever hope to

It’s just funny b/c Denver used a first-round pick on Hodge (an oversized point guard and a non-shooting shooting guard) and then let him basically walk. He put up nice numbers at NC State, but his game never translated to the League.

Our Australian contingency here talked about him playing down under and doing well though.

didn't we draft Jarrett Jack in that draft and trade him?

I would have had Jack than Hodge the way it turned out.

Jarrett Jack

that’s a good(?) basketball name.

Two first names...
nothing wrong with two first names ;)

where did the “can’t trust anyone with two first names” from? i’m very trustworthy…for the most part..

From the guy who had three first names

and was told he couldn’t be trusted?

Talladega nights

The ballad of Ricky bobby

Yeah, he was traded to Portland for Klieza Rock.
Was it ever determined why Julius Hodge got shot?

Does anybody remember that? I think he was in a car on 36 between Denver and Boulder and another car pulled up alongside and he got shot once in the leg. Am I making this all up?

Wikipedia says this about that
After visiting a nightclub on April 8, 2006, Hodge was on Interstate 76 in North Denver around 2:00 a.m. when another vehicle pulled alongside his and fired several shots. Hodge was told he came within 5 minutes of bleeding to death. The case has yet to be solved.19
What is this 'wikipedia' you cite and how does it have all the answers?
It has answers but is not always 100% accurate

because it pretty much can be edited by anyone. But they do try to monitor it for really bad inaccuracies and falsehoods.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julius_Hodge#Highway_shooting

Wasn't it a follow up

to an incident that happened in a club?

Read the excerpt from above
Not sure...try looking it up on wikipedia....

….it usually has the answer.

That's cheating.
Research is cheating?
It was I-76

There was that club near Pecos or Federal that is a superfund site (joke, but not really, there’s some environmental issues there) and he was traveling east toward I-25 when shot by another car.

tall point guards are not ideal

Their height makes it take longer to dribble up and down and quicker point guards will never allow them to get a step on them making it hard to distribute the ball. The ideal size for a point guard nowadays is 6’1-6’3, any taller and they will be a step slow with the ball and too short and they’d have a hard time defending point guards a little taller. Lawson can get away with it because he is very athletic and fast and makes up for his mediocre man to man defense by being very good at playing the passing lanes and generating steals.

Lack of Scoring

Doesn’t like to score. Never really has. I grew up in the same county as he did and in high school he would get double doubles and triple doubles without points being there. He is someone who can grab 10 boards, dish 10 assists, and steal the ball a few times or get a few blocks, yet never attempt a shot. He has a decent 3 pt shot and can get to the rim, but thats about the extent of his scoring.

his college numbers weren’t that good against a not terribly tough schedule… he tended to defer a lot when NBA teams generally want to see prospects dominate especially against weak competition. The Nuggets like his distribution, but still, even guys like Jason Kidd or Rajon Rondo generally score a little bit in college. Stone’s college usage rate as a senior was 12.1, which is lower than Birdman’s. So the worry is no matter how well he can pass, teams won’t have to guard him.

He was a senior

Averaging 8.5 pts and 5.3 dimes in a below average conference. NBA teams probably felt he reached his peak and those numbers aren’t very good for a guy with his size and athletic gifts. NBA draft is about potential and I doubt NBA teams much there.

Can’t teach size and speed though…so he is worth a flier. If Dre can teach him how to play the position, he could be good.

worth a flyer is exactly right

the NBA as a whole (and probably other sports leagues) is way too reluctant to give chances to high performing undrafted FAs/D-League guys/good Euros who are trying to break in. How much worse can someone like Stone or whoever be than Mike Bibby? Or what does Bo McCalebb have to do to get a shot over someone like Steve Blake? And at least there’s upside with Stone, with Bibby not so much.

You notice that Bibby can't even get on the floor with the pt guard starved Knicks?

How much do you think D’antoni would like to have a pass first point right now?

He was out with an injury too

Played well his first few games back, but I am sure they are just trying to keep him healthy right now. No sense in breaking a 38 year old point guard more than he has already been broken

seriously

Mike Bibby has a job in the league, Steve Blake gets nearly full MLE money, and Bo McCalebb is hangin’ out in Europe.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EuroBasket_2011

I know it’s just Euros, but those guys on the leaderboards are not scrubs.

Sometmies it is about not making mistakes and knowing your roll

Hence, Mike Bibby still has a job.

"Sometimes"..."role"

Thursty would have a full time job correcting me.

maybe Mike Bibby doesn't make mental mistakes

but he’s so slow and bad on defense that a young player would have to make quite a few mistakes to make him as bad an NBA player as Bibby. And again, with a younger guy you at least get the possibility of some potential.

Same with someone like Juwan Howard, who’s been outplayed by multiple D-League callups over the past two years (think Chris Johnson, Anthony Tolliver), and I think it’s just a massive oversight and overpreference for a known (crappy) quantity on the part of NBA front offices.

The Stone kid intrigues me

Shades of, argh can’t remember, senior moment coming in …. one-two-three seconds…. what was the name of our guard during the 80s, super stopper from Alabama couldn’t shoot himself with a garden hose full of water…? ON the tip of my tongue. Help me Stiffs. Anyway, Stone can intimidate small point guards or switch to the 2 on D, pass, rebound, steal, and drive the hoop. We have lots of quality shooters. We don’t need another scorer. And in the NBA, scoring is the thing guys can develop later in their careers.

You can score in the NBA even if you can't shoot very well

See, Miller, Andre. That dude just knows how to get it done.

Andris Biedrins also
TR

Dunn is the guy you’re thinking of. Michael Jordan rated him the best defender of anybody who ever went up against him.

Thanks. Senior moment passed.
Yep, TR Dunn

LOVED that guy! Defense all day. Rebounding fool. That was a good backcourt with Fat Lever and Michael Adams.

I can't believe

Someone would name their child “Fat”.

Imagine the problems on the playground.

And Chauncey...Imagine

the fights he got into….

Those old timey ones where some lordly fellow slaps you with a riding glove and demands 'satisfaction'?
He was okay

He hung out with World B. Free.

He was "Laffyette"

But his brother called him “Fat” cause he couldn’t pronounce his name. Something like that. But yeah, good thing he’s skinny, or else that’d be a tough moniker. A la “Fat Albert”….

if he's on the floor with the right mix of players he doesn't need to score

problem is with opposing team’s defense, if the other teams know he is no threat to score they will use his man to double our scorers.

Why did people pass on Ginobili and Parker?

Its cuz the SA GMs are ahead of the curve, just like I believe our FO is now ahead of the curve

Sometimes I wish there was a law

as there is in some european countries, restricting what parents can name their child. Julyan is yet another example of stupid parents misspelling their childs name to make them “unique”. Now he is doomed to no one ever being able to spell his name without it being spelled out, and every time I read it I read “Julie Ann”. Not as bad at “CraPhonso” but still, stupid parent.s

Im all for the uniqueness, as long as it isnt my name.

Id way rather have a dude on my team named Julyan Stone than Tyler Anderson or Karl Smith. Those bland names just are harder to root for.

I am fine with uniqueness

I have a cousin named Odin. Easy to spell and pronounce, and it is fairly unique in the U.S. But don’t name your kid Crap, and if you want to name your child Ted, don’t spell it Tyehd to make them “unique”.

Even if they're named Geography Map?

If I recall, he played college ball in the 90’s. Then there was God Shamgod. And I think there is a kid named “Godsgift” or something like that playing right now…

I love the uniqueness too, but not sure I’d want to go around people saying “yo, Geography!”

Hey. He could be Nat Geo!
My name is Hebrew for "God's Gift"
my son's name is Jabin

Hebrew for “God’s own”.

Is it pronounced

Habin?

lol...no

pronounced “Jaybin” to us at least…that could be the "proper"way to go, but then everyone would think we were Jewish, NTTIAWWT, as you would say

Oh okay. I was just curious.
of course our names don't reflect family roots

our parents are from India but raised Christian, many of us like that have official biblical names but are called more traditional names at home among family and family friends, confused the heck out of my school friends when my folks called me “Sunil”

Majestic and Scientific Mapp

played at Virginia I believ

Your parents named you ThrowItDownBigManThrowitDown....so you should talk!
YES!!!!!!!!!!!

Dude thinks he can come in this humpy-bumpy with that name and call somebody out?!?

Isn't that Terry Tate

the office linebacker? I wish they had more commercials like that one

"kill the joe, make some mo!"

wooooooo!

Indeed it is!

You can find a ton of his commercials that never aired on YouTube, some good … some just okay.

I have seen most of them

Just wish they could bring him back!

LOL, Bill Walton named me that

I could go back to Karlsucks….

My name is very conventional, and so is the nickname that everyone calls me, though no one outside of Ireland understands how the nickname comes from my legal name, so I spend half my life explaining it.

People in Ireland...

… call you Tiddy and “ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown” is your legal name?

You are one odd cat.

So if he's one odd cat

and I’m the other odd Cat

does that mean we cancel each other out?

You aren't odd, though

You are one of the most normal people I know.

I don't know what that says

about either one of us :D

You might want to reconsider your opinion

it is listed as an approved way to spell Julian.

http://www.thinkbabynames.com/meaning/1/Julyan

Also,

this
http://www.thinkbabynames.com/meaning/1/Julyan

LHWYA

the definition you provide basically says that Julyan is a misspelling of Julian, as I said, and that it is very unpopular.

It doesn't say that at all.

If you look at the link above it says it’s one of 8 variant spellings. A variant spelling is not a misspelling. It may be uncommon and unpopular but it is still an accepted spelling of the name and not just something his parents made up.

picking an unusual variant is exactly the problem I was describing

Want to name your daughter Laura, spell it Laura. If you spell it Lhorah, everyone still thinks her name is Laura, except anytime anyone has to write it down, or the teacher has to attempt to pronounce it at the beginning of the year. Picking an uncommon variation to a common name is just as bad as making up a stupid name. It’s like that Vince Vaughn movie where they meet “Stanley with a C”.

Ran into the same thing when it came to naming my Son, Dante is his name...

Donte
Dahntay
Daunte

It just goes on….

But why is it a problem?
When people try to spell it lol
Good lord, man

This is silly. Laura can be spelled Lora or Lara too. It’s not wrong is my point. It’s in the list of baby names. Are you saying that John shouldn’t be spelled Jon, Ian, Ianto, Ioannis, etc?

It doesn't matter

To people like Tiddy. There is only one right way for anything and everything else is wrong.

Now you are coming around!

I just think parents need to think about what they are doing to their children when they name them. You aren’t doing your child any favors giving them a name that no one can spell or that will get them beaten up in school. If you name your kid Brock, you have to know that “Broccoli” is going to be next to “Crap” getting beat up on the playground.

the hell does it matter

when do you have to spell out your first name without spelling out your last name anyway

If your name is

John Smith, or Jeffrey Morton, you can tell people your name and they are correct with the spelling almost all of the time. I take names over the phone every day, and I see the people who know the routine of explaining their name to every person they meet.

“My name is Matt. It’s spelled Kmaht because both my parents names start with a K, and we’re from Norway.”

you don't get to pick your last name

so it doesn’t really matter if you have a last name that is not easily spelled

Unless you are Geoffrey Morton

or Jon Smythe

My name is straight forward but always spelled wrong here

why? Because it is the German spelling of Phillip, mine is spelled Philipp. So I should change my name even though it is very common just to suit the American style of spelling it? No thanks.

Three P's, one L

Fascinating.

The common form of spelling it in Germanic languages

if you go to Germany or Austria you will see nothing but that spelling.

Nah man, we'll just add an E on the end

Because it must be Phillippe!

Man

when French speaking girls say Philippe it is so awesome, I could move to France or Belgium just for that reason alone.

German

My wife lived in Germany for 7 years and loved it there. We were talking the other day and we think German is the best language to use if you are angry. German just sounds so right when yelled with an angry tone.

/smh
He has a good point though

just listen in to one of mine and my dad’s arguments and you will agree. Of course the idea that German’s have no humor is constantly proven wrong by studies, but I don’t get mad at little stereotypes, people need to be able to laugh at oneself.

Me either

All us Irishmen are drunks who spend all night singing in the bar.

If by singing you mean throwing up :)

(I’m part Irish…)

Germans who say nice things....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6mndRtsS88

LOL that's funny.

Somewhere there must be a Downfall version of Germans being complimentary.

Carvey and Carell

will usually end well

But using a variation on an actual name

is not quite the same thing as naming them Crap Bagg or Princess Bananahammock. Also, it didn’t seem to hurt Cubby Broccoli’s career….

The variation isn't as bad

it’s just stupid to claim that your child is somehow unique because they are “Khameron” instead of “Cameron” and now have to explain the spelling of their name the rest of their lives. Naming your child Sarah doesn’t make her name unique, no matter how many C’s you insert into it.

But why are you are making the assumption

that Julyan Stone’s parents chose Julyan for that reason? They have another child named Jason and another named J.T.(don’t know what that stands for).

Is it at all possible that they just liked the Julyan spelling better?

What about Katherine vs Catherine? Is one wrong?

They are both wrong

It is Kathryn.

No it's Cathryn
If "Cat" is short

For some variation of “Catherine”, then it is spelled however you say it is spelled.

LOL. It is not a variation on Catherine
because it seems that

everyone I know is intentionally misspelling their children’s names to make them “unique”. Perhaps this isn’t why Stone’s parents chose to misspell his name. I’m tired of meeting people who are proud of themselves for making their child “unique” when all they’ve done is introduce an unnecessary complication for the kid.

I don't get this.

Why is it a complication? You tell someone your name, you spell it if they ask and problem solved

Try having a conversation about the spelling of your name

with every person you meet sometime. Or try picking up a rental car or getting on an airplane when the secretary accidentally made the reservations under your nickname which doesn’t match your photo ID and the check in worker won’t believe you that the nickname is a valid one for the name on your ID.

I do have that conversation because I have

an unusual last name. Very unusual.

My First name and last name are very unusual too
I have an old skool first name

and unusual last name. And believe me pairing a first name with our last name is a challenge to avoid being made fun of. But now I just laugh.

I have a Spanish First name

and a heavily German last name

The best last name I've run into lately

is Szarlej. My old neighbor was a Vredenburg who taught elementary school. She didn’t even attempt to get the kids to pronounce her name, just Ms. V.

Having numbers in your last name is indeed unusual
Not to mention

body parts.

There are languages

Where numbers are used instead of letters to make sounds that we don’t have letters for.

I'll bet you looked that up :P
Yep

I have a friend who lives in Tunisia and most of his FB posts are in Arabic and often include numbers within words.

you must not work with people from other countries or backgrounds

or anyone not named john smith apparently. spelling out your name is hardly the hassle that comes with a woman giving up her last name, keeping it or hyphenating it. remembering which of those options you chose on official documents is the problem. not spelling out your name. come on dude.

The wife keeping her last name

makes it easy to identify telemarketers. They were always calling my dad by he’s wife’s last name, and vice versa.

So wait,

they called and asked for Mrs. Maggot?

What is unique and what is norm?

there are many different ethnicities in this country, some names are spelled differently because of their language of origin, so we should anglicize the entire country and ignore cultural differences? Sounds great, can’t wait to have 15 friends named Bill.

I never said that

I really like Mozzy’s daughters name. I said don’t take a standard name and intentionally misspell it. No one of any culture anywhere ever named their child Khymberlei.

Google disagrees.....

“you can look it up” – Annie Savoy

My point is

that Kimberley is maybe the most common way to spell the name in America but there are other ways to spell a name then what is common, plus you do not know the history of the name. Many American names were once spelled differently as well, it is a country of immigrants after all.

The people I know who are doing it

aren’t doing it because it is part of their heritage. As I said, when my Aunt named my cousin Odin, I knew it was because of her family background. I’m talking about people for whom Kimberly is the standard spelling of their family and heritage and who are intentionally making up a new spelling. If your parents had spelled your name Phylllipp, that isn’t heritage.

I am now legally changing my name to Phylllipp

it is awesome

I think you should
I'll be Phyll H. from now on
The Phyllippi of the world are sad
Oh BOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE!
What is this law you speak of? Seriously
There are some european countries

that have a list of approved names, and you have to pick from one of those. It’s an attempt to maintain some cultural heritage.

Which countries?
Without using Wikipedia

I’d say this is something that is happening in Slavic countries. I could be wrong, though. Since I don’t cheat.

I think the Czech Republic went through this not long ago.

Seriously this thing about using wikipedia or the internet

is “cheating” is about as silly as complaining about how one names their children….

Just saying

Some of us know things without having to look it up.

I retain so much useless knowledge, it is ridiculous.

And some of us know other things without having to look it up too

I guess your brain is bigger than mine…

France passed a law in the early 1800s that prohibited all names except those on a preapproved list; the last of these laws was repealed in 1993. In Germany, the government still bans invented names and names that don’t clearly designate a child’s sex. Sweden and Denmark forbid names that officials think might subject a child to ridicule. Swedish authorities have rejected such names as Veranda, Ikea and Metallica.
Do you honestly think

the U.S. would implement such a thing?

Not in a million years
No

Never happen, I just wish that people would think a little before naming their kids. Dweezle and Moon Unit agree with me.

Dweezil and Moon Unit

don’t care because they are awesome. Also, did you ask them?

Moon Unit

Is one of the most incredibly awesome people ever.

Not surprising, considering her father and all. And he was stuck with such a boring name.

:(

You don't get to speak for them

They loved their father and mother for all of their brilliant eccentricities.

The German law is a bit silly

but it is more specifically referring to names which will embarrass a child, most celebrities would probably be rejected there. But they would in all likelihood except a different spelling of a common name, which apparently you have issues with.

Here you go

http://www.economist.com/node/21542749

All I know is that I

feel bad for George Foreman’s kids more so than Dweezil or Moon Unit or Julyan Stone or LaMichael James

Hey I have no dog in this little argument

I was just trying to provide some info. I think parents should name their kids what they want. There’s now way you can gaurantee that the kid will like the name of that it will work out well for them. You can try to go safe and name them Jennifer and then they might be mad at you because they have 12 other Jennifers her year when she gets to highschool. You may name your daughter Maria because of her cultural heritage ans she may just think that it sounds awfully Catholic. What can ya do?

I appreciate your helpful research and linkage! Seriously.
Exactly.

I tried to use my middle name when I was in middle school because I hated my first name. But now it’s not that common so I’m cool with it.

What is your first name?

?

Not telling..:)
But it does have lots of variants :)
My GF's name is Katherine...

she went by Katie when she was little, but she never liked how common it was, and she thinks Katherine sounds too stuffy and European (she identifies pretty strongly with the Mexican side of her family) One of her high school friends decided to start calling her “Reenie” so there would be a nickname that was based off the second part of her name. And now that’s what she always goes by.

Call her Katerina?
I think that is Italian? Or something else?

I’m pretty sure the Spanish equivalent is Catalina.

Some people are hosed no matter what they do

If your name is Tom Cruise or Harry Potter, you lost the lottery.

I've thought about that before

Isn’t it fairly likely that there was a Harry Potter somewhere out there before the books were written? Its not like either is a particularly uncommon name.

An African immigrant who works in an office with my buddy is named Adolf

/facepalm

I watched a thing on Hitler's family

They all changed their identities and had to hide themselves.

On the lighter side

Kids who hate their names can always change them to something more conventional to make life ‘easier’, like John Smith or Mike Mechanic or Joe Lunchbucket.

My daughter has about 43 classmates named Kylie or Kayla

My wife and I went old school with “Margaret” since everyone knows how to spell it, it has a million different nicknames associated with it so the best nickname that fits her personality can come to the fore, and there aren’t many Margaret’s anymore.

I’m with TIDBMTID on this debate. Our nieces are Kymberlei and Kristynna (pronounced Kimberly and Christina) and we just shook our heads when those names were announced (they are awfully cute though).

My Step-Mother is Margaret

Goes by Maggie, except my Dad sometimes called her Maggot. I was never sure how he got away with that one, as my wife would hit me on the head with a frying pan if I tried something like that.

Well no wonder you have name issues :) (kidding)
Maggot might be the worst pet name ever

My wife calls me fartman sometimes, but I usually deserve it when she is victimized by the Dutch-oven.

I knew a Margot in high school

And she was “Maggot”.

Pretty terrible, really.

I really liked what I saw on Wednesday night.

He made a couple of passes where it looked like his teammates weren’t ready for the pass, else his assist line would have looked better. I really liked his defensive intensity, and ability – for the most part – to stay in front of a very quick guard in Isaiah Thomas.

Stating the obvious about Andre

It still blows my mind that our starting 1 can go down, and nobody thinks, “now what?”. Getting Andre this year was a huge score.

Yeah, imagine if some of the point guards around the league went out ...

Especially in Boston.

Isn't he out right now?

and haven’t they won 3 straight since he went down? (Not saying it is sustainable long-term)

Nate

is not always best when using sarcasm. Maybe just too bland or too into thinking about which movie to use for the next round of nuggets

I think Russscot

was agreeing with Nate that losing the starting point guard in Boston was not that big of a deal…

or maybe I’ve fallen and I can’t get up.

Or maybe I’m just an idiot! Did that ever cross your mind????

More than once!

just kidding man. But I do like your choices of movies for the Nuggets

(pssst

I think it’s too late to suck up now)

Not trying to suck up

I dont need the stiff points!

HAHA!

How about this snow folks? Andy, Jeff and I are all going to the game tonight. Please stop! Driving from BFE will not be fun!

BFE?

I’m all the way up in Steamboat and trying to generate enough health to go tonight!

oh, i know what BFE is btw
I you don't generate enough health for Denver

I’ll be at the Grand Lake Brewery after work tonight and will buy you a beer. Grand Lake only needs about half the health as Denver.

True dat

but if im not healthy enough to drive to Denver, should I be drinking a beer?

Please stop what?
The snow

but in your case, it’s trying to dig out from negative Stiff points.

Snow hasn't been bad I thought

Only about a foot in Steamboat overnight.

Besides Winter Park needs all the snow it can get!
Very little here

maybe a couple of inches. Winter Park finally opened the Parsenn Bowl, but now my knee isn’t working, so I can’t go.

don't feel bad

I can’t ski or snowboard anymore since suffering a back injury. Then again, not enough snow on the slopes this year anyway to want to go.

That sucks

have you looked into the disabled skiing at all? Winter Park has a very good program for it. And yes, no snow this year.

Spine injury

No bueno for skiing

I didn't understand what he was alluding too.

And I have no negative Stiff points. I am +55 IIRC.

I knew Rondo missed one game ... didn't know he missed extended time!

But yeah, who is there backup? Like Avery Bradley or something? Having PP and Ray Allen helps, but uh … yeah … uh … whoopsie!

Back on topic...

Is that an ‘approved’ name?

I should think so.

His parents approved it.

Google'd it

and your statement is seconded.

He really is pretty hot....
Reply fail.

They are a good looking power couple! Speaking of Power Couples … who is watching The Challenge this season?

I was not reply failing.

I did that on purpose.

Are you an idiot or what ;)?

hey now!

Don’t go playing the idiot card on Nate. After all, we know he’s not an idiot. He’s a Nugget fan.

It was a joke

from a comment earlier in the thread

So was mine. A poor one.

She is pretty good at looking.

IMO

Stone’s stat line looks like this 13 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds tonight…. watch and be amazed

Little high on points IMO

I would guess 8 pts, 10 assists and 12 rebounds assuming he gets 25 mins

he'll get more mins than 25
Hard to see

unless Karl really decided to not play Hamilton. He needs all the guards he can get right now. Brewer will probably get the start at SG and play 25 min. Then Dre will play close to 38 I think.

What?

Isn’t Hamilton a 3? Also, Why would Brewer get the start at 3 when Gallo is perfectly non-injured?

Wait, what?

Isn’t Hamilton a SF? and why would we start Brewer at SF when we have a perfectly uninjured Gallo?

Woops. my auto-update is not working correctly

That I was insane and double posted

Gallo start at 3

But from my readings on twitter, aaa and Rudy both hope to play, but Hamilton plays the 3 but can play sg also

basically an undrafted Rubio
Whoa!

Have you seen Rubio play?

8/10/12 sounds like a ricky line :)
What?

Rubio likes to shoot. And he isn’t that good at it.

But, he is an excellent player

…exceptional cour vision. I’m not quite there based on 15 minutes of Stone at this point. Maybe 6 -5-3 tonight..hopefully, less than 2 TOs.

sarcasm ppl
...it went way over my head.
SARCASM LOST ON INTERNET SHOCKER
Julyan Stone Fits Right In

Pass-happy. Smart player. Tough Defense. Hits the boards. Positive attitude.
JStone along with Brew have length and quickness to cause real problems with their perimeter defense.
I’ve been high on this kid since camp, another amazing find from our front office. Undrafted, but the kid can play, if he ever learns to shoot, look out!

What in the

Nuggets play on Sunday, during the Super Bowl. What genius scheduled that?

The Super Bowl is on Feb 5th

Nuggets don’t play that day :)

Well, there you go

shows how much I know.

This Sunday is the walk-through practice known as the Pro Bowl
OT: Hochman posted this awesome link to posters from the 80s

I so want the Elway one

http://colt-rane.com/80s-sports-posters/

And there are some cool basketball ones too :)
Good for Nate's movie references

Maybe just call Gallo the Italian Stallion and have a picture of Gallo as a centaur??

oh man

LT and Karl Malones are the best!

sheesh, look at how skinny Mark McGwire was
Off-topic: GK rotations with injuries

Andre is an ironman and can play 35 minutes of PG. That leaves 13 for Stone.
Corey Brewer will play 25 minutes at SG. That leaves 10 for Stone and 8 for Hamilton.
Gallo can play all 48 minutes at small forward. But he’ll go for 35 and Al will play 13.
Nene will play 10 minutes at power forward and Al will play 20 and Bird and K2 will get about 10 each.
Moz will get 10 minutes at Center, Nene will get 25 and Bird and K2 will get about four each.

That’s how I’d do it. Really thin on the wing. And I’m joking about Moz only playing 10 minutes. I think hell get close to 20-25 now that he is emerging somewhat.

No one wants to talk about Nugget rotations

:(

sorry, it's too on-topic
Well you shouldn't have labeled it OFF-TOPIC
Well, isn't it?

Since we are talking about names?

It's still better than baseball.

As is almost anything. Except for cricket.

With all of our injuries, we're really lucky that Bargnani will probably miss the game tonight.

The Raptors are a much better team with him on the floor.

But they are still the craptors in the end no matter who is playing
Awwww...poor Toronto :(
Good news from Dempsey
dempseypost Chris Dempsey
#Nuggets G Arron Afflalo (groin) and Rudy Fernandez (Achilles) both participated in shootaround this morning.
Hmm

I think both should sit out against the Raptors.

Yeah for real let them sit this one out, they can come in the Clippers game.

The rookies will play hard anyway and need some burn. This is the closest you will get to a D-league team in the NBA, so I don’t think they will play that bad.

Just because they participated in the shootaround

doesn’t mean they’ll play.

I know

But I still wanted to make that point.

And Dempsey counters with
Afflalo says he will play tonight vs Toronto. He’d missed two straight games.
I put a lot of work into coming up with those rotations

and AAA goes and pisses all over them.

Good for him.

I've got it!

G.K. can only play a pre-approved list of rotations provided by Fly Agaric!

Which goes along with your

pre-approved list of how to spell their names on the roster.

Now wonder he hates Afflalo

“Arron with two R’s, get off our team!!” ==TIDBMTID

or is it one R? lol
It's two and lolz
I just go with AAA

because I can never remember how to spell any of his names.

Yes!

What is your opinion of Andersen vs. Anderson? Which one is correct?

Hans Christian or Chris "Birdman"?
One of them is wrong

According to Tiddy, there is to be no variation — EVER!!!111

I have no idea

but if I had to guess I’d say Andersen is probably a misspelling of Anderson at some point. Anderson being from the traditional “Anders Son”.

Ha ha

Or: Maybe neither is a misspelling.

I just wish I could trust Aron

Who remembers how many times he re-injured that hammy last year?

Well he did it once

But it was annoying that he came back early. He said this time he is caring for his body more. He says the groin doesn’t hurt as much as the hammy and he took extra rest to be sure.
But you can take Friday off, we need AAA vs. the Clippers more.

he's had a week off of it, he should be ok if it feels it wasnt that bad to begin with
Damn it!!!!

Why does he have to do it against the Raptors, this is a game where people can rest.
Kinda funny getting mad over a player returning to a game…funny what these new Nuggets have done to me.

he needs to quit being a hero

and playing injured

And then people will complain

that he’s being paid a lot of money to sit…

I don't think anybody will complain

if AAA takes extra time to make sure he’s healthy, especially when we’ve got the depth to cover him.

We saw what happened when he came back too soon last year. We might have beaten the Thunder with him.

well given he has a history

of re-aggrevating injuries not to mention ineffective play while injured, I don’t see how this is a good thing

I agree with you.

I’m saying the big contract changes the perception.

or that he keeps getting injured
limited minutes at 80%?

I wouldn’t mind AAA shaking off the rust a little tonight IF he can play scaled down a little with limited minutes. I would be more concerned if he came out cold against CP3 or Mo and went full out and re-injured himself that way.

Looks like Dirk is not scared of the West even though Dallas lost to the TWolves

http://espn.go.com/dallas/nba/story/_/id/7509541/dallas-mavericks-dirk-nowitzki-not-scared-western-conference-teams

Hmm, what about a team that has pretty much owned the Mavs for the last 4 years and ummm beat them by 22 points on opening night. I wish I could be that confident after being burned like that.

Winning a title will do that for you.
Except they don't have the same team

Oh well let Dirk be satisfied with the piling Ls. And just keep saying you aren’t scared, they have a term for this…its called denial and it isn’t just a river in Northern Africa

On-topic

I hate my name.

It is so conventional and boring.

I think Mateo is definitely non-conventional

How do I know your name is Mateo…I am a wizard (or just pay attention)

Mateo is good

But the truth is, I’m really a Matthew and no one calls me Mateo here.

When I lived in Alaska, though, I was a Mateo.

you could always change it to

Matt A World Peace

You win today's thread
I'm going to change it

No idea to what.

Make it unique

Mhatheyw. Isn’t that better.

I always felt bad for

Mat Latos….his parents lost a T somewhere….

When you live in Alaska

you can become whoever you want to be. I think I know a couple Mateo’s round here.

It was more necessity

As there were seven Matthews in my circle of friends.

Not really an issue any more, as I don’t have any friends.

Well with a name like Fly

I can see why.

But thanks for paying attention.
Not if your

Latino, Italian or French

Fly Agaric is pretty bland
yeah, i know a ton of guys named fly.
I have a good friend everyone calls Fly

It is her last name.

Please tell me her first name is

Supa!

Yeah, I know tons of people named after hallucinogenic Fungi
Dempsey tweets
Full #Nuggets injury update w/ G Karl saying he’ll be cautious in how he uses Afflalo and Fernandez http://bit.ly/z6yLo5 #nuggetsink
GK being cautious

Me likey…time to play to rooks. This is a good team for the rooks to gain experience. We don’t need them against better teams yet.

We need to win the game tho.

No New Orleans repeat…..

Oh God. I don't think Fly could take it.

We might have to go on suicide watch for him ;)

meaning he may play them at the same together for 30 min instead of 35
OT: Because this is good no matter how you spell it

Apparently, it’s National Chocolate Cake Day!

No thanks.
What's wrong with you ?

(kidding!)

I don't like chocolate

Or cake.

But I respect the right of other people to do so. Here. You can have my piece.

Okay we can be friends again.

Now, hand over the cake.

I like chocolate and cake

but the chocolate cake is the most overused one. My old job used to do birthday cakes, and it was almost always chocolate cake with chocolate icing.

Gotta go with yellow cake mix and Chocolate icing

Need some contrast

A secretary in my office double taked when I requested cheesecake...

… for my birthday cake way back when. Choco cake is so routine.

Agreeing with you way too much this thread….

Mmmm, cheesecake

My womanfriend often makes food for an old friend of ours who’s allergic to cow’s milk, and gluten intolerant, too. We’re fortunate to live close to someone with goats, so Melinda sometimes makes Wendy a cheesecake with goat cheese (chevre, like cream cheese) and a spelt crust. HOLY SHIT is it good, some of the best cheesecake ever!

But I love me some chocolate cake, especially if it’s made with heavy, truffle-like chocolate.

random

but you should try to make chocolate bean cake. its essentially like chocolate cake except you use black beans in it. i know it sounds really weird, but if made correctly, it is just as good as regular chocolate cake and is a hell of a lot healthier

Yum, I've had this

So good!

UTEP fan here from MinerRush...

Hope Denver is taking good care of Julyan and I don’t think he could have landed in a better organization. Stone is really a class act and was absolutely vital to the resurgence of UTEP Basketball. Whenever we would go on the road to play and we’d have to listen to the opponents announcers, they’d usually say it was ‘Unfair for a 6’7 guy to play PG.’ He would absolutely shut down the opponents leading scorer. His game took a massive step forward when Floyd got here.

My only gripe about him, and he would even mention it, was his ugly, just ugly, jump shot.

Take it easy.

Nice to hear!! And welcome!
Ugly jump shot not a problem

In Denver, the plan is to keep passing until you find someone open under the hoop.

And we haven’t seen a lot of Stone yet, but it sure looks to me that the kid can pass.

Can he pass a Stone?
Thanks for the word on Stone

Hoping for very good to great things from him with the Nuggets. His potential as an NBA PG is plain as day. Must say, however, that thus far I haven’t seen what others claim they see in his little court time this season. He looks really tentative and prone to mistakes, along with an apparent compulsion to defer that manifests in passing the ball the second it touches his hands.

But so what? He’s gotten so few opportunities to get the least bit comfortable. Here’s hoping tonight brings him some valuable minutes, mistakes or not.

hahaha Corey Brewer's botched layup in Sacramento made ESPN's

Worst of the Worst list

Glad we can laugh about that

Can you imagine how many times guys are doing that in practice?

To cut him some slack, I don’t think he was trying to be fancy. I think he was initially going up for a dunk, then decided he was too far out and wasn’t going to make it, so had to switch to the layup. Did others see it that way, or did you think he was trying to hot dog it?

looked like a leaning, one-handed jam

a little flare, but not over the top. that being said, easily avoided by doing a simple, boring two handed dunk

what the....

Nate…don’t write a column about Julyan Stone again! This is what happens!

Hey now

Nate just presented a can of worms, us stiffs opened it

He changed the spelling to Nhyattte.
*N8

Fixed that for you.

A couple of things strangely on-topic

My middle name is Scot, with one ‘t’ and not because my parents were pretentious. Rather, I was born abroad in an army hospital, and for some reason, it was recorded that way on the birth report. We [my family] didn’t even know it until I turned 16 and went to get my driver’s license.

Also “Andersen” is the Scandinavian spelling of “Anderson” :p

ZOMG- Nate retweets
Sources — Miami Heat, Los Angeles Clippers among teams pursuing Kenyon Martin – ESPN

Oh please let it be the Clippers

Chris Anderson and Kenyon would look good in a Clippers jersey.

I think Anderson with his colorful tattoos would actually look cool in a Clippers Jersey.

Honestly, I’m just trying to see if we can trade Bird for a 2nd round pick from the Clips.
