Don't let the Raptors two consecutive Western Conference road wins fool you. With the Raptors best player Andrea Bargnani re-aggravating his strained left calf, even a depleted Nuggets team should take down the dinos in Denver tonight.

Toronto: 6-13 (4-8 on the road)

Denver: Rudy Fernandez (right Achilles strain) is a game-time decision. Arron Afflalo (groin strain) and Ty Lawson (left ankle sprain) are day-to-day and are doubtful. DeMarre Carroll (left hamstring strain) is also day-to-day and a game-time decision.
Toronto: Andrea Bargnani (strained left calf) is out.Television: Altitude TV
Season Series: 0-0
Opposition's Take: Raptors HQ
When you reside in the NBA's basement things just don't seem to break your way. Such is the case of the Toronto Raptors. Having lost eight straight games, this week the Raptors welcomed back power forward (and Italian country mate of the Nuggets' Danilo Gallinari) Andrea Bargnani and reeled off two impressive road victories on back-to-back nights, beating Steve Nash's Suns on Tuesday and the Jazz in double overtime on Wednesday.
But with 1:05 remaining in the first overtime of the Jazz game, Bargnani re-aggravated his strained left calf injury and it's uncertain as to when he'll play again. With Bargnani this season, the Raptors are surprisingly mediocre at 6-7. Without him, they are a dreadful 0-6.
Let's hope our Nuggets make that 0-7 after tonight's game is over.
In recent seasons, the Raptors have been one of those teams that the Nuggets have absolutely feasted upon. Over the previous six seasons, the Nuggets are 13-1 against Toronto with an average margin of victory of 14.6 points. When the Raptors made their lone trip to Denver last season, the Nuggets beat them by 33 points, and it wasn't even that close (to be fair, the Raptors were coming off a back-to-back in Oklahoma City where they almost won the game).
Of concern entering Friday's contest with Toronto shouldn't be Bargnani's injury, but rather our own litany of ailments. The Nuggets could be missing Ty Lawson, Arron Afflalo and Rudy Fernandez tonight due to an assortment of injuries, meaning ample playing time could be given to rookie Julyan Stone, backup shooting guard Corey Brewer and even rookies Kenneth Faried and Jordan Hamilton depending on how the game shakes out.
The most serious injury, of course, is Lawson's - as he sets the pace for the game and Nuggets head coach George Karl trusts his diminutive point guard to constantly push the ball quickly up the court. Veteran backup point guard Andre Miller has been playing well for Denver, but he simply doesn't - and cannot - push the ball like Lawson does, taking away the Nuggets key advantage against crappy Eastern Conference teams that don't like to run (such as the Raptors, who average an NBA second-worst 87.5 points per game). And I doubt Karl is ready to give Stone the keys to the car, so to speak. So if Lawson indeed sits, look for the Nuggets to play a more controlled game and just hope that the Raptors are so bad without Bargnani that the Nuggets will win anyway.
On a side note, tonight's game will feature three lucky Denver Stiffs readers who won a pair of tickets at last weekend's Stiffs Night Out party to sit three rows behind the Nuggets bench. Nate, Jeff and I will all be at the game, too, with Nate and Jeff sitting with Mile High Fan's Vicki and Russ right outside the Nuggets tunnel and I'll be sitting about six rows up behind Nuggets announcers Scott Hastings and Chris Marlowe. For all the other Stiffs in attendance tonight, let's try to gather at the tunnel heading to Blue Sky Grill at halftime for a family photo!
Scouting the Raptors
Raptors Non-Stiffs
Andrea Bargnani: The stats speak for themselves. The Raptors are 6-7 with Bargnani and 0-6 without him.
Jose Calderon: Fernandez's fellow Spaniard, Calderon is having another solid season by averaging 10.6 ppg, 8.7 apg and shooting 93% from the free throw line.
Anthony Carter: "AC" makes his return to Denver tonight and the mere fact that this undersized, under-talented, 36-year-old point guard is still pulling a paycheck in the NBA makes him a non-Stiff to me!
Raptors Stiffs
Linas Kleiza: Kleiza, the former Nugget, is having a Stiff-like season. His field goal percentage has sunk to a career-low 37.5% and his minutes are way down, too. Although he did come up big against the Jazz in double overtime on Wednesday with 25 points, reminding us why Kleiza (who once scored 41 points in a Nuggets uniform) is always dangerous.
Gary Forbes: How many so-so shooting guards have we seen thrive in Denver under coach Karl only to disappear when they play somewhere else (a la Dahntay Jones)? Forbes, a terrific story last season when he made the Nuggets roster, can't find his place in Toronto ... or his shot. He's "shooting" 34% from the field and his minutes are erratic.
Final Thought
The Raptors aren't that good with Bargnani but without him, they're awful. So if ever there was a time for the Nuggets to rest some key players with injuries and still pick up a victory, it's tonight. It's pulling off wins like this that could be the difference between home court advantage or not come playoff time.

Time for Smash Mouth B-ball
Gallo, Nene, Moz this is your game. Make it a layup drill. The post’s Dempsey says AAA is going to try and give it a go.
We will see if the coaching staff lets him do it. I am torn, I know everyone wants to rest against “weak” opponents. But no win is guaranteed and it is nice to have as many options available as you can.
Glad I don’t coach….

Great Website...
I appreciate all the insightful thought that goes into your game preview. As a Denver transplant living in the desert, you are my one-stop-shop for all things Nuggets! Great work guys.
Maxie Miner in Vegas - January 27, 2012
DP quotes Karl that Rudy and AAA will play tonight...
…and goes on to say he is a bit worried about playing them. Also says he wants Rudy to play some PG over Stone. I just don’t like this decision at all. Not in the least. Not a bit. Not one little bit. Not one iota. We need Rudy and AAA healthy this season, not fighting lingering injuries. We can beat Toronto..why risk set backs to Rudy or AAA. Did I mention I don’t like this idea?
bonaire - January 27, 2012
I agree that they should sit
But if they are healthy, then the sooner they get the rust off, the better.
I just know groins and achillieses and all that are not easy injuries to come back from. See Rudy playing in Washington.
I want these guys healthy for the playoffs.
Fly Agaric - January 27, 2012
GK just
Saying he just has to watch’em close and see if they are lying. Players want to play and push it. Which is good. Having a bunch of gamers is a good thing.

AAA has developed a reputation of being too hungry to return from injury
and re-tweaking whatever it is that ails him. I hope that trend doesn’t continue.

Did G. Forbes thrive in Denver?
Seems like the description of him in Toronto matches the description of him here…maybe with a slightly better shooting % in Denver. I know, I know..he was pretty good and I liked him…but still.
FYI – if you have not had a chance to watch “The Association”, you should, it is great. Although, the return of Nene got big time and the return of AAA didn’t get any…I assume this is an editing issue.
Can’t wait to see how the next episode plays out with the Nugs going to NY. I wonder who wins?
Pusherman - January 27, 2012
Or it will be addressed in the next episode?
SDcat09 - January 27, 2012
Nah, they are well into the season
All the suspense was about Nene’s return and AAA’s return didn’t even get a mention
Pusherman - January 27, 2012
There was little interest shown in AAA
Unlike Nene, who was talking to Houston, New Jersey and who knows who else.
AAA is great. I’m a fan. But Nene is a much greater piece.
Fly Agaric - January 27, 2012
not a lot of suspense w/ AAA's resigning
Nene was really in doubt. There was no media attention to AAA since it seemed to be a forgone conclusion that Denver would match any offers. Maybe in the first episode the editors said, “well we have enough time to put in a blurb, or we can squeeze in a completely out-of-context shot of rudy/manimal oop. Yeah, let’s put manimal in.”

Toronto Raptors fan here
I have been following this blog a lot this season as the Nuggets have become one of my favorite teams to watch (Thanks League pass!).I can see a loss for the Raptors here tonight. No Bargs=no offense. Though, we do like to take advantage of key injuries, like you guys have.
Side note: While losing Bargs is obviously a huge letdown, I will also point out that part of the reason the Raptors have been terrible was the loss of Bayless as our back-up point guard. His tempo really improves the Raps offense, and keeps the likes of Carter and Forbes off the floor. Forbes was actually acting as our backup PG for 5 or so games when we finally gave up on Carter. Now that he has been back, our second unit is much better.
Good Luck tonight, and I look forward to watching a lot more of Denver this season. I already have my tickets for when the Nuggets visit Toronto this season.
rcharris_85 - January 27, 2012
I'm always surprised that are basketball fans in Toronto
I used to live in Canada, at when I talked about basketball people would get funny looks on their face, like they were suppressing the urge to check me into the boards really hard.
Thanks for stopping by. I hope the Raptors get healthier this season so they can beat the Knicks some more.

You might be surprised that there are any other teams in Denver aside from the Broncos…or players other than Tebow.

Always drives me crazy.
Especially now. No more football, save one dumb game next weekend, and the still find every conceivable Broncos angle.

It’s maddening how this cycle of fan irrationality feeds media hype feeds more fan irrationality feeds more media hype… to the point we are now.
One player, while the NFL was working out its version of the CBA, said there would be riots in the streets if the NFL didn’t have a season. Sadly, I believe he would have been right.

stupid radio needs to get over that
The people in Denver need to understand that they have a winner in the nuggets. People don’t understand what they have until it is too late. WAKE UP DENVER!!!! Support the nuggets, you can live one day without hearing some boring news about the Broncos.
Mancar - January 27, 2012
Depends where you lived
In Toronto, we obviously have the Leafs which are the big ticket, but the raptors still get great crowds. Last friday we had a game against the Blazers ( a good team, but not considered a draw) and there were 17,500. Considering the matchup, and the fact that the raptors are awful this season, that is a pretty good crowd. I look around the NBA and see much worse. We take pride in our team here (even though we dont have much to be proud about. Yay Atlantic division Champs banner) and we are happy to support them.
No its time to sit back, lose and see who we get in this stellar draft this season.
rcharris_85 - January 27, 2012
Good to hear your city is so supportive
You have some good character guys in Forbes and AC. AC is hated on around here, but he seems like a solid person and good teammate. I really liked Forbes when he was here. He also strikes me as a good character guy with some upside, so it was good to see him go somewhere to make a little more money while he can.

I’ve been wishing good things for the Raptors this year with the hiring of Dwane Casey. He’s a guy who has deserved another chance for a while, and I’m betting he’ll be great for your team. And good point about Bayless, who’s another key talent for Toronto. Lot’s of talent there, needless to say. Here’s hoping the injury bug will soon move along to some other city.

Even if Stone could push the pace for Denver
he would probably turn the ball over a lot. Miller is still a quality starting point guard, no matter if his style of play is different from Lawson, he is still a quality half-court playmaker and his passes up the court are easily the best on the team. That is the advantage of having someone like Miller on your team.
CloudBurst - January 27, 2012
Miller didn't seem to have much trouble getting the ball out on the break against Sacto

Nuggets are undefeated this season when Andrew does the preview?
To stay positive, the silver lining if Lawson is out for a few games is that the team will work on half court offense. Could benefit them in the long run.
ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown - January 27, 2012
This is getting out of hand
Kevin Love just signed a four year extension, with a player opt out on the fourth year.
So now Minny gets “Love-Drama” starting on the day he signs his deal.
ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown - January 27, 2012
Haha, wow
Artimus Mangilord - January 27, 2012
I don't see how this is "Love-Drama"
He’s talking about 3 years down the line, and that organization is ridiculously messed up.
It’s more like “I ain’t gonna be held prisoner by KAAAAAAAAAHN” than “I want to go to a bigger market”.
Agaliarept - January 27, 2012
It's Kahn that caused the drama
The Timberwolves wouldn’t give Love a five-year deal. He’s just taking care of himself, right? If I were a GM with a player who snags 14 or 15 rebounds a night along with scoring 20, some of it with a lovely three-point stroke, I’d give him five years and max money. But I’m just a carping fan.
LongWindedHank - January 27, 2012
Hi KFH
Can you imagine if Denver had three years of Melo keeping his options open? If Love had just said he was happy to get the contract and excited to be staying in Minnesota, then everyone is happy. Now the fans in Minnesota will get treated to the media parceing every word and move both he and the team makes, looking for indications that he will demand a trade.
ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown - January 27, 2012
*parsing
ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown - January 27, 2012
You were about to get Thursty'd!
Yeah, Love didn’t have to say that stuff, but Kahn didn’t have to be a dick, either. Love was asked about it, and he answered. And mostly with positives about his team. But yeah, it’ll be too much of a distraction for a team that needs anything but.
Do you have League Pass? I’ve gotten to see Minnesota a few times already this season, and they are having much fun and quite a bit of success with Rubio roaming the court. He often finds Love camped out beyond the line, and pop. Ridnour is having a resurgence, as well. And of course Adelman is on the job and making them much more accountable. I hope their improvement continues throughout this year; who knows what next year could be like for them? And they may try to move Beasley along.
LongWindedHank - January 27, 2012
I don't have league pass
since I get the Nuggets on altitude. Especially this year, with the games so close together, I don’t watch many other teams. Closer to the playoffs I might watch some potential matchups.

Sometimes. This story is all over the place. (She is darling cute, eh?) It’s almost quaint that she believes (and that some judges are still willing to rule) there is an actual principle of government neutrality in religion. It’s technically true, sure, but come on, we live in a Judeo-Christian society. And don’t forget that I grew up in Mississippi. I’ve seen these battles play out again and again.
LongWindedHank - January 27, 2012
I am hopeful
that this is the next issue that gets addressed nationally and it will be safe for people like this girl to “come out of the closet” for lack of a better term. About 10 years ago I was having a conversation with a guy about racism, and how much things had improved. He asked me what I thought what would be the next big issue like that, and I told him gay marriage. He got very upset and angry and told me that would never happen. They’ve got a case going in court now that I think will result in it being made legal in the entire country.

We have a fairly mediocre home record (by the Nuggets standards) to this point in the season. Karl is more than likely considering playing Afflalo and Fernandez because we really can’t afford to drop more than 3-4 games at home if we possible hope to secure a top seed in the West.
I hope they are good enough to go and this doesn’t set back their recovery.

AishNuggetNarang - January 27, 2012
Cool beans. Thanks!
SDcat09 - January 27, 2012
Seriously?

And clear your cache and try again
SDcat09 - January 27, 2012
Clear your cache?
Agaliarept - January 27, 2012
restart your computer
that happens to me when I try to log out of yahoo or sb nation and restarting then logging out always fixes it
LaimbeersGuardianAngel - January 27, 2012
He shouldn't have to reboot though
clearing the cache and closing the browser should be enough
SDcat09 - January 27, 2012
Just troll using his username
until you get banned then you’ll be able to login…
CombatChuk - January 27, 2012
Good plan
SDcat09 - January 27, 2012

crreid4444 - January 27, 2012

LaimbeersGuardianAngel - January 27, 2012
haha mine either, I read an article on stumble somewhere don't know if it was legit, but NCAA said most drug offenses in college were from lax players haha
crreid4444 - January 27, 2012
I'm personally opposed to the existence of lax
LaimbeersGuardianAngel - January 27, 2012
i'm watching it
close game
moondoggie12 - January 27, 2012
commentator said game would be on right after...

Gr3yStreet - January 27, 2012
meteor meteor
please god make it rain
crreid4444 - January 27, 2012
I suppose you could root for NY
The Fans would see NY beating the Heat without Melo and demand NY trading Melo to Siberia for some draft picks
CombatChuk - January 27, 2012
I'll take the Knicks
SDcat09 - January 27, 2012
Well of course
You are all mature and stuff
ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown - January 27, 2012

Cuz they’re beating the Heat without him! LoL

CloudBurst - January 27, 2012
Part of me is rooting for this outcome
SDcat09 - January 27, 2012
nastyy
crreid4444 - January 27, 2012
wait what?
Why would you have to turtlewax him?
InboundingLobPass - January 27, 2012 via mobile
because I have to suck up to him all year now
and I had a bet with a Raptors fan, 5 dollars over having to put that phrase in my signature line.
CloudBurst - January 27, 2012
How is this supposed to actually happen?
SDcat09 - January 27, 2012
Raptors win, I put that in my signature
Nuggets win, he owes me 5 bucks.
CloudBurst - January 27, 2012
Oh I thought you were going to actually have to do
which I found profoundly interesting
SDcat09 - January 27, 2012
Ugh
My roommate chose now to decide to play some xbox. I don’t mind because he’ll only be playing for a little while before he heads out, but now I miss the beginning of the game. :9

Ask me how I know
CombatChuk - January 27, 2012
Your '74 Ford Gremlin Keys to the Game
1. Play with lots of energy on defense right out of the gate
2. Don’t let them get hot shooting in the 1st quarter
3. Don’t let them score 30+ points in the 1st quarter
4. Don’t be down by 10 points at the end of the 1st quarter to a bad team
Those are your ’74 Ford Gremlin Keys to the Game.
ParkHillNative - January 27, 2012
And... AAA needs to shake off that rust.
CloudBurst - January 27, 2012

He was a never used Center that the Bulls drafted I think
He’s just a big stiff
CombatChuk - January 27, 2012
I was just thinking about that
I realized Mozgov brings everything he brings with more athleticism, upside, skill, court vision, and shooting touch.
Obviously, though, there are comparisons.

This team as hard or harder than the 06’-09’ “Thuggets” and plays decidedly better defense. Without ANY of the dirty plays *cough*reggieevans*cough* *cough*DahntayJones*cough*
I do miss my Thuggets, but this team is probably more fun.

I dunno. 09 was the most fun I've ever had watching the Nuggets
barring this season outcome

That ‘09 season was actually really fun. This season has a similar kind of energy though. Remember Melo’s dunk at the beginning of ’09 season against the Jazz?

Ah of course.

Sherlock is brilliant. Love Moffat. He wrote The Girl in The Fireplace, easily one of my favorite Who episodes ever. Not to mention Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead.
But to each their own! :D
OldSkoolSoldja - January 27, 2012
That's not why I love Ten
I like the stories under RTD better. Moffat also wrote Empty Child/Doctor Dance which are amongst my favorites. I think he’s a better writer than showrunner….maybe..
SDcat09 - January 27, 2012
I can dig it.
I like to think he gives the whow a good direction that he compliments with his writing.

sgiustra - January 27, 2012
Seems like the right plan
SDcat09 - January 27, 2012
just gravy or something special?
LaimbeersGuardianAngel - January 27, 2012
typical italian tomato sauce
lots of garlic, some herbs (remember to put a little sugar in the sauce)
If I get to meatballs, I might just put a small cube of mozzarella cheese in each one as a surprise
sgiustra - January 27, 2012
sounds bangin
my gravy usually includes a pinch of cinnamon instead of sugar to give it some depth… but I might try sugar next time just to see
LaimbeersGuardianAngel - January 27, 2012
me too, thats a smart ingredient
one caution, do not use even a little too much or the dish is useless
sgiustra - January 27, 2012

LaimbeersGuardianAngel - January 27, 2012

cinnamon sounds interesting though

well fellow Stiffs
it’s been fun making a rare appearance in a game thread, but I gotta go now.
Nugs have been paying close attention to my ’74 Ford Gremlin Keys to the Game, so I am confident that they will maintain their lead enough to win the game without too much trouble.
Later ’taters!
ParkHillNative - January 27, 2012
Nice to see you!
SDcat09 - January 27, 2012
likewise!
ParkHillNative - January 27, 2012
You must introduce a different car to your next keys to the game
I’m expecting a 90’s GEO, but you’ll come up with something I’m sure.
CloudBurst - January 27, 2012
yeah, thinking of making a semi-regular feature out of it
maybe the quality of car should match the quality of opponent

sgiustra - January 27, 2012
Usually just some whitefish like cod or tilapia
but swordfish is briliant for fancy fish tacos.
