Count me among those that are not too worried about the Denver Nuggets. Are there serious problems? Yes. Can the Nuggets rebound from their current losing streak? Of course.

... the Nuggets are beat up and tired. That is the reality. It bites, but not as bad Ethan Hawke's acting in that awful 1994 film.
The Nuggets rotations are out of whack and some could argue the rotations are just totally wacky. Danilo Gallinari and Timofey Mozgov are out. Big deal? Yes, it's a very big deal ... about 14-feet worth.
So far we've seen two guys try to replace Gallo in the starting lineup. Julyan Stone had the first crack at replacing the Italian Stallion, but the kid from Virginia was only granted seven minutes of playing time.
Next up against the Warriors it was Rudy Fernandez's turn to play Gallo for a night. The Spaniard played 37 minutes, but had a rough night from the floor finishing 4-13 shooting for 9 points. Fernandez has been one of the lone Nuggets who looks like he gives a damn no matter what the score is and Karl rewarded that play with the start.
The Rookie from UTEP and 6'6'' and 185 pound Fernandez are not Gallo clones. Gallo goes 6'10'' and 225 pounds, he leads the team in scoring with 17 per game. Mr. Italy plays solid defense and can help out on the boards. He's the one getting the opponent into foul trouble with his menacing drives to the rim. Without, the Nuggets are missing their best all around player.
Next up, Timofey Mozgov. The man who has spawned his own Militia and is averaging 5.7 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game. Before his injured his ankle against the Lakers, Moz was averaging 8.2 points and 5.6 rebounds over his last fives games. His teammates were beginning to trust his offense and Moz was gaining confidence.
The one constant over this five game losing streak? Mozgov has missed all five games, said for seven minutes of the Lakers contest (where his injury came as he was extending the Nuggets lead off a layup, 49-46 with 10:00 to go in the 3rd quarter).
Karl has used Kosta Koufos, Chris Andersen, and Kenneth Faried to try to replace Moz and things just haven't been the same. Sure, Moz's numbers are not eye-popping, but his 1.2 blocks per game rank him around 27th in the league just behind the likes of Tyson Chandler (1.31) and Joakim Noah (1.22) and ahead of Brendan Haywood (1.12) and Emeka Okafor (1.00). Without the big man in there to help control the boards and protect the paint, the Nuggets defense has certainly struggled (can Moz defend the three-pointers too!?!).
Denver is on a horrific five game losing streak and the team has lost seven of their last eight, but they are still right in the thick of things out West. Oklahoma City is putting a little space between themselves and the rest of the conference, but not by much. The Nuggets are only 5.5 games out of first place in the West, 3 games out of second place, and the 4-9 seeds are all virtually tied at the moment with 11-12 losses each.
The season will have its ups-and-downs and it might be nice for the Nuggets to learn that they need to make some adjustments to learn how to keep winning. Denver has played in a lot of close games already, they have been blown out, and they have blown teams out. We're experiencing a lot of highs and lows and perhaps Nuggets Nation needs to take a page out of Andre Miller's book and just not get too high or low. It's not good for our collective blood pressure.
And don't forget ... Gallo and Mozgov will be coming back soon and after that the Nuggets may just add Wilson Chandler too. Help is on the way. Nobody said it would be easy ...

2nd wind..
Nuggets just need to catch their 2nd wind. This week has been brutal. The team looks tired mentally and physically. It is the Nuggets turn to get whipped by the schedule.
Ain’t no hiding the fact that the team need to learn to execute in crunch time (whenever that may be). Right now teams are taking advantage of how sloppy the Nuggets are. They need to get better.
You are right, where the Nuggets want to go isn’t easy. Takes overcoming tough stretches. We will see how bad the Nuggets want to win over the 2nd half of the season.
djyoung71 - February 10, 2012
I agree that our core problem is injuries
However the coaching staff must take a share of the blame. I have long agreed with the school of thought that George sgould expand his rotations across the bench, all those DNP-ers have game and energy to offer.

GK said as much as well… he said he’s basically just looking for anyone who can provide energy, so he’s sees the same things you see.

Chandler's CBA team..
is officially locked into the playoffs now? Is that what I’m hearing? If so, anyone know the details of round 1? ie dates, best of… thank you.
UKnowULovedVanQwik - February 10, 2012
Still two games left in the season
and they usually have 10-14 days off before playoffs. so I’d say their probably starting between the 25th to 29th of February. There are three rounds total, the first two rounds are best of 5 and the finals are best of 7.

Then I think they are in. They’re playing the worst team in the CBA, but guess you never know.
Glad that Chandler came in and put forth his best effort. Speaks volumes about the kind of player he is.

btw good post Nate
I do think we all need to take a collective chill-pill… I think the reason there is so much outrage is because we were all just starting to believe that we were a “contender,” and oh how good it felt… what a tale of twists this season is turning out to be.
UKnowULovedVanQwik - February 10, 2012
Theory
As Nate pointed out above, the injury to Mozgov may be effecting Denver’s defense more then you would expect. It might be because we are missing his protection of the paint and rebounds, not so much from the point of view of the opposing team, but from the point of view of the other Nuggets. The wings might be hedging down just a little bit more to protect the lane, which is opening up the 3 ball, and spiraling Denver’s defense down the drain. We still have K2 that can do much the same as Moz (maybe better), but he can’t play the whole game, and once the defense allows the 3 point shooters to get in rhythm it is game over.
Just a thought.
jbmmlang - February 10, 2012
It is interesting...as many fans were calling for K2 to replace Mozzie
I am glad Karl stuck with Mozgov. I like Koufos and he is a fine player also, but Mozzie is a very underrated player. His confidence was starting to take off, which was part of the reason we ran off 7 wins in a row.
I hope he gets back soon.
NugzJunkie - February 11, 2012
Good words to ease the craziness
I do believe we’ll play better at home. It wouldn’t suprise me to see a 10-13 game winning streak at home later this season.
The schedule has been brutual lately. If you look back we had three heart breaking losses with Memphis, LAC, and LAL. Then you get in to a 7 games in 10 nights with injuries.
They’ll start to get some of the teams with the other shoe off. That means Portland doesn’t only to get to play us on back to backs. That means GS doesn’t get to do the shimmy cause they’re nailing 50% from three.
I’m now impatient for Chandler to come back. He’s a great help defender from last year. Sat may not be our win but I see it coming to change soon.
remyrems - February 10, 2012
Recent schedules
Will try to do a fan post about this with detailed #‘s if I can find time to finish up and better validate the analysis, but played around some with the schedule #’s in an attempt to ease the pain after last night’s game—looking at back to backs played vs. games played against teams on the tail end of a back to back, we’ve had the roughest combo of that of any set of teams in the league so far.
We’ve also had the misfortune of timing that with games against a number of teams in the opposite situation lately—for example, Golden State has barely played any back to backs to this point. Memphis, Houston, and the Clippers have all had very soft scheduling from that perspective as well.
Doesn’t mean I’m not frustrated with Karl’s playing time decisions around the rookies, given that the analysis just means that we should be digging deeper into the bench to get some fresh legs, but the schedule load does get much easier from this point for us, while getting much tougher for most of the remainder of the league.
ReluctantOptimist - February 10, 2012
Glass half empty: Injuries hurt, but plenty of us Stiffs had same complaints when we were 14-5
There can be no doubt that Mozgov’s injury against the Lakers turned things in an ugly direction. And the impact of Gallo going down cannot be overstated.
Yet this team had serious defensive problems early on—just take a look at fan comments and proprietor posts from the first few games on, and not just on DS. The half-court offense has been ineffective and a source of loud complaints from the get-go. Karl’s rotations have been nothing short of bizarre, whether you look at it in terms of wins and losses right now or player development as the future becomes the present.
Bet most of us love a creative coach who isn’t afraid to toss out the playbook along with rigid adherence to traditional basketball positions (as in PG/SG/SF/PF/C) in order to exploit weaknesses and/or inject some energy into the proceedings. What scares the crap out of us is Karl’s apparent rigidity when this ostensible creativity is falling flatter than a pancake.
Injuries or no, this is a team in disarray. I never expected the Nuggets to be a top-four seed. I thought we’d be a blast to watch; that we’d scare the shit out of many of the top teams; and that we’d lose plenty of games that our talent might appear to dictate we should have won. All of that has taken place. It’s how we look doing it that is of concern. That and the fact that, at times, we’re far from competitive when we should be. Take the Golden State game, for example.
That’s on Karl. Could players play better? Of course. But it’s the coaching staff’s job to get the most out of them. They’re failing by most any measure. Win or lose, this team is lacking in serious, focused, effective leadership.

Sorry KFH, (and fellow stiffs) your comments are usually right on
and Stiff are usually right on too.
But you and the chorus of agree-ers on this incredibly greened post are way off base
I had some optimism before season began and as season was going well. We might turn around this terrible storm. Maybe.
But, had you told me that important members of our team would miss the number of games that have been missed, I would never have been optimistic. If they dont get back, and even if they do but too late, this will still be a wasted season.
Had you told me that our starting center and then best player would go down in feb, I’d have been depressed.
I dont like karl but to blame him for not getting good performances from marginal and inexperienced players is simply misguided.
sgiustra - February 11, 2012
Sorry you think we're off base
Maybe it’s not clear that we’re not necessarily ragging Karl about wins and losses. (Some may be, but not me.) This team looked bad in the ways we’re bitching about when we were 14-5, and it still does. Sure, when you’ve got all your aces in the game, the deficiencies will be more easily covered up. But in my eyes, those problems are just more exposed right now.
Take a look during a game. It matters little who is on the floor (and let’s not forget that there are still seven very experienced healthy guys on the active list, six if we’re not counting Andersen). The Nuggets are being beaten on defense and shut down in the half-court offense. Plus, they’re not able to get out on the break nearly as much as they count on being able to. These appear to be glaring problems of design and execution.
I’m still hoping for good things to come. A healthy roster will go a long way toward realizing that hope. But health alone won’t come close to fixing what’s wrong with how this team approaches the game on both ends of the court.
LongWindedHank - February 11, 2012
Ok, so here is what I get from your comment
When the Nugs were going 14 – 5, it was something of a mirage because we were showing signs of weaknesses that would eventually be exposed
Now that we have suffered a slew of injuries and lost 7 out of eight, those weak spots are showing up.
Right?
Isnt it even more reasonable to assume that we are losing because of injuries than because of those weaknesses?
Finally, I think the Nugs will rebound, but come Mar 1st, we still wont be close to whole because gallo does not magically come back and play great. And, I’m frankly pessimistic about keeping health apart from what we are experiencing right now.
And so, there is a possibility that we will never be able to make up for what happens in Feb
PS I agree that we showed weaknesses even while winning but there are very few teams that dont have some weaknesses. So, no we were winning, but far from perfectly
sgiustra - February 11, 2012

Clompy - February 10, 2012
yup and please add Moz, Jeff
because we are seeing what happens when we rely on too many minutes from KK, too many Center minutes from Nene.
Here’s one aspect of whats going wrong with Moz and Gallo out. Notice we’re not outrunning anyone?
Yep, because Gallo and Moz are excellent fast breakers, Moz is especially fast for a Center and Gallo flat out busts his butt.
A side effect of this lack? Well, Ty is not a good half court guard so when we dont fast break one of our best weapons is rendered useless.

A look at the poll results
(and its early, but you all know I love polling!) and more than half of the Stiffs think the Nuggets are a solid playoff team despite this slide. And an legit majority thinks Denver will make it in as a 7 or 8 — which, I think, would be disappointing, but not terrible.
So. Not a lot of worried Nuggets fans out there. Seems a lot of us understand the whims of scheduling and the outrageous fortune of Denver’s spate of injuries.
Clearly, the posters making noise about firing the coach, trading players and basically going into all-out panic mode are just a grumpy and very vocal minority.
Granted, success in basketball has nothing to do with how the fans feel about the team it may well be that some of the more critical posters are a bit more informed. To be sure, as Nate mentioned in the post, there are a lot of worrying trends. And, as KarlFanHenry pointed out, there are a lot of issues that Stiffs pointed out about this team before the injuries piled up and the skid started in earnest.
The Nuggets have a lot to figure out, sans doubt, but the problems aren’t so critical to warrant a midseason coaching change or a drastic, team-altering trade. Nuggets fans went through that last year.
Go Nuggets!

This Lin thing is getting pretty interesting
too bad Melo will probably ruin him when he comes back.
Rainbow skyline - February 10, 2012
Maybe
But, while we all agree NBA pundits are idiots, the conventional wisdom in the Knicks has been that they are hurting for a point guard. Especially with D’Antoni’s system.
And, lo, here comes an undervalued, intelligent player who can pass and score and do all those things the Knicks need and the kid is able to hit the ground running and becoming the biggest story in the NBA in a matter of days.
Of course, playing in the major media market that is New York helps with the hype.
He’s the real deal, though. He’s good. And a legit feel-good story. I’m definitely a fan. He is single-handedly saving D’Antoni’s coaching career, or at least the Knicks portion.
Lin started so hot the only way to go is down. And when Melo returns more fingers will be pointed. Poor Carmelo. He can’t be traded to New Jersey soon enough.
Fly Agaric - February 10, 2012

Trust me, if Lin went on this amazing run anywhere else, he’d barely be a footnote. Do this in New York City and the whole world is going to know.

jd80229 - February 10, 2012

Fly Agaric - February 10, 2012
It's not just D'Antoni's system either.
I think i was the last game he played in the D League that he went for a triple double. That’s impressive on any level.
Larry Cunningham - February 10, 2012
Why would Melo ruin him?
SDcat09 - February 10, 2012
Cos
He is a ballstopper. Remember how he ruined the success of his team when playing with other stars like Iverson and Billups.
Oh wait. I promised not to be sarcastic. Sorry. I’m drunk.
The criticisms are valid. But Melo was doing a lot early in the season to the detriment of the team because there was no one else willing or able to handle the ball-handling duties. And Melo is a scorer, but not a distributor. Of course this benefited no one.
I’d wager that Melo and Lin coexist perfectly, but both see their scoring numbers go down. Keep in mind, I’m often wrong when I bet on the Knicks.
Fly Agaric - February 10, 2012
ball stopper
but I would hope he (Melo) is learning something about Lin and the rest of the team during the current streak without him and Amare, especially considering they are beating the Lakers without them.
jd80229 - February 10, 2012
Cat, is this a rhetorical question?
Could you come up with a couple ways that Melo could muss things up cause, I gotta tell you, I could surely roll out 10 in a blink of the eye.
Worst, yet, the Knicks are fun, again – its been 11 months since I could say that.
sgiustra - February 11, 2012
No it was not a rhetorical question.
Seriously.
SDcat09 - February 11, 2012
well then, others might be joining in so I'll just cite two things
Anthony offensive game is predicated on isolations because thats what he does. Melo is not like a ray Allen who catches ad shoots converting teammates passes into assists. When you play that style of game, it isnt conducive to team work.
The Knicks are winning, for now, because the QB is playing great and the whole team is involved.
Relatedly, there are good iso players in the NBA like Dirk and P Pierce but 1) both are superior to Anthony and 2) they can isolate while making it a part of the game flow. Dirk and Pierce may not get a lot of assists but they are good passers.
Anthony is a pretty good passer who can garner assists but slows down flow, and team sags.
Btw, I havent said that Anthony is selfish. IDK whether he is and really dont care.
Finally, the Knicks look so much better on defense right now. Is there any doubt that Anthony’s defense is poor?
So, Ok Anthony only has two weaknesses – 1) offense and 2)defense; besides that he’s great.
sgiustra - February 11, 2012
Are you an alias for Andrew Feinstein?
Because he still feels loads of butt hurt that Melo left so I just thought you might be him.
P.S. Hollinger ranks Melo as number four of all small forwards in the NBA. Ray Allen, who is a Guard so I’m not sure why you are comparing him to Melo, is ranked number 15.

I really don't think missing Moz and his 20 mgp is really what's ailing the nugs
and I think there has been little to no dropoff from him to KK (at least on offense). Losing Gallo obviously hurts, but that cannot possibly explain this free-fall. Our issues run deeper.
In short, our defense is based on creating turnovers-right now we aren’t getting any, and the results have been disastrous. Our offense is based on constant movement and penetration, but no one is moving and no one besides Ty can penetrate.
Injuries and fatigue clearly play a role with these issues, but the fact is we are too predictable on both sides and teams seem to have us scouted. The good news is we have a highly versatile roster and can play virtually any style at any time, the bad news is that GK is our coach.
Still, I’m not jumping ship. I’ve followed sports long enough (and the nuggets in particular) to know that things will get better and then worse and then better again. Still, I am dumbfounded by how bad this funk has been.
Rainbow skyline - February 10, 2012

obviously a lot to like, but it’s too bad he’s on the knicks and I cannot root for him (except for tonight).
Rainbow skyline - February 10, 2012
he can actually play and makes his teammates better
instead of his fans whining that Tebow wins despite of his teammates and blame them almost exclusively when the Broncos lose.
jd80229 - February 10, 2012
Stupid question
is Lin a rookie?
SDcat09 - February 10, 2012
Undrafted rookie
Russscot - February 10, 2012
Ahhh thank you!
SDcat09 - February 10, 2012
a'course ;)
Russscot - February 10, 2012
He was an undrafted rookie
Last year with the Golden State Warriors. They cut him to make a run at DeAndre Jordan and the Knicks picked him up.
Fly Agaric - February 10, 2012
I think he's still considered a rookie.
Don’t think he was in the league long enough…but I could be wrong.
Russscot - February 10, 2012
He played against Wall in a lot of events that draft class
But if they want to call him a rookie this year, I call shenanigans.
Fly Agaric - February 10, 2012
all he does is lin
all he does is lin
CombatChuk - February 10, 2012
You saw that t-shirt also?
Russscot - February 10, 2012
I saw Skip Bayless tweet that
so I kind of rolled with it lol
CombatChuk - February 10, 2012
sad that Bayless has hopped on
Lin doesn’t deserve that jackass on his bandwagon
jd80229 - February 10, 2012
Hahaha you mean everyone who posts at milehighreport.com
Agreed. Lin actually has conventional skill.
KevinAwesome - February 10, 2012
Knowing Dolan.
He’ll trade him for Chris Paul.
Kevin L - February 10, 2012
whoa there
are we already at the point where trading Lin for Paul would be a dumb move?
Rainbow skyline - February 10, 2012
Tebow makes himself an underdog by not doing what players at his position are supposed
yet has some success win wise
jd80229 - February 10, 2012
And there is no comparison because Lin is actually talented.
georgekarl - February 10, 2012
Beating the Lakers on EPSN
Is gonna put this kid into the stratosphere. Or at least the leading trending topic on Twitter. Don’t really know how that works, as I haven’t logged in in more than year. But you get the idea.
Fly Agaric - February 10, 2012
Official us policy is one china
Including Taiwan. Now if he was from Thailand.
ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown - February 10, 2012
Melo seems to be enjoying it.
SDcat09 - February 10, 2012
Thanks to Jeremy Lin and the entire population of China, Derrick Rose will NEVER start an allstar game after this year.
Kevin L - February 10, 2012
ROFL
SDcat09 - February 10, 2012
I'm partial to LinSanity
SDcat09 - February 10, 2012
funny the Chinese will claim Lin
Like China claimed Taiwan…..its the Dave Chapelle racial draft all over again. :)
jd80229 - February 10, 2012
It’s as legit as I claim Tebow because of where he was born.
Kevin L - February 10, 2012
Is it me or does Lin seem like he'd be a good fit in Denver?
SDcat09 - February 10, 2012
Can we retroactively add him to the 'Melo trade?
Russscot - February 10, 2012
I don't see why not.
SDcat09 - February 10, 2012
UN needs an asian delegate.
Kevin L - February 10, 2012
True that
SDcat09 - February 10, 2012
yeah, can Masai call Dolan and say there was some fine print in the trade
saying that if any of your undrafted free agents blow up they need to come to Denver.
jd80229 - February 10, 2012
I'm pretty sure Dolan would fall for it
Russscot - February 10, 2012
I'm starting to think Masai
is a vampire and he just glamoured Dolan.
I’m not saying it’s a bad thing FWIW
SDcat09 - February 10, 2012
Lin was with GS last year and was on that team until he was release
by GS before season started…claimed by houstpn then released and finally claimed by Knicks on Dec 27.
heck of a journey for Lin
LEEDS - February 10, 2012 via Android app
Lin looked good last year when he was able to pry his ass off the bench
League Pass guy here. I caught Lin a few times last season with Golden State. He had obvious quickness and court vision. He knew how to get to spots and make passes, and he could score a little, too. Of course, he didn’t see a ton of time off the pine, which means he couldn’t learn their system as well as he needed to, nor could he get what only minutes can bring.
Seems like he could have helped a little more than they knew. But it’s a good problem to have Ellis and Curry, I guess.
LongWindedHank - February 11, 2012
agreed
my wife love Lin and we watch him play when we can…he was good enough last year but didnt gt a chance cause GS was loaded at 1 & 2.
LEEDS - February 11, 2012 via Android app
Run this to the batputer.
Kevin L - February 10, 2012
If Lin played in Denver
Karl would bench him for ¨basketball reasons¨
gonugs - February 11, 2012
Every time I see Pau Gasol
I cannot help but sing the “Llama” Song
SDcat09 - February 10, 2012
Which of course makes me think of Monty Python
Russscot - February 10, 2012
I'm not seeing the connection.....
SDcat09 - February 10, 2012
the Llamas in the opening credits for "Holy Grail"
Russscot - February 10, 2012
OHHH durhhrr.....
SDcat09 - February 10, 2012
So are we rooting for OKC or Utah?
I mean I’m rooting for the meteor….
SDcat09 - February 10, 2012
Utah...really don't like anyone on OKC beyond KD and Sefoloshia
And only because both seem humble and hard workers
Russscot - February 10, 2012
Which one losing helps us more?
SDcat09 - February 10, 2012
I think either...but I feel that Utah is kinda a paper tiger, and won't be there at the end,
If we want to have any thoughts of coming back and winning the division (and I’m not giving up hope yet), we need OKC to lose a few more of the close games they’ve been pulling out of their ass all year.
Russscot - February 10, 2012
Meteor
CombatChuk - February 10, 2012
Whoa...wait is that for real?
Where was that?
SDcat09 - February 10, 2012
I believe South Africa
commence with the District 9 jokes…
CombatChuk - February 10, 2012
Pretty sure that was from Canada
Highway footage from Lethbridge in Alberta. Could be wrong. But I follow these things.
Fly Agaric - February 10, 2012
Here
http://www.disinfo.com/2009/11/meteor-exploding-over-south-africa-video/
It’s in Johannesburg…
I theorize they couldn’t find it because the core was made of mostly ice and the heat from entering atmosphere kind of made it blow spectacularly, kind of like that one meteor in Russia that took out several square miles in like 1917
CombatChuk - February 10, 2012
That's awesome
SDcat09 - February 10, 2012
You got to see the Canadian footage
It is just as spectacular.
Fly Agaric - February 10, 2012
OMG I love that movie!
SDcat09 - February 10, 2012
Damn that Sephiroth……
Kevin L - February 10, 2012
Awesome gif, sir
Russscot - February 10, 2012
I know Lin is a PG
But he’s is in his second year or frrom UNC or Spain – would George Karl have played him?
KevinAwesome - February 10, 2012
good point....nope
or he would be playing PF with Ty, Miller, AAA, with Stone at C
jd80229 - February 10, 2012
Watching The Soup right now
Show is starting to grow on me…
CombatChuk - February 10, 2012
For the Lin!
Fly Agaric - February 10, 2012
Who said we don’t ave accurate eyes.
Kevin L - February 10, 2012
*have
Kevin L - February 10, 2012
Another thing, too bad they can’t say FTL.
Kevin L - February 11, 2012
Wow....you can play with shades on at the garden.
That’s cool.
