- Karl decides to ride his lineup into the ground again. Stone, Brewer, AAA, Big Al, and Faried ... hope they have the energy!
- 48.5 ticks left, Nuggets ball, and the offense has been horrific in OT. It's tied 95-95, only four total points scored in this OT by both teams.
- Well, the Nuggets won this one ... 103-101. It wasn't pretty, it wasn't easy, but they'll take it over a .500 team.
Game recap:
We saw the Nuggets get pushed to overtime once again, but this time it was the Nuggets who the extra period with an Al Harrington three-pointer. It was also the Nuggets who failed to win it in regulation with a couple missed free throws by Big Al and a missed jumper at the buzzer by Afflalo.
In the overtime, we once again saw Karl use the same lineup that he rode during the final stretch of the fourth quarter. Stone (playing for the ejected Miller and injured Lawson), AAA, Brewer, Faried, and Big Al. It looked like that unit was completely gassed, but
Rick Adelman used the same lineup as well and both tired squads tried to do battle and it was sloppy.
The big stories tonight ... Faried's rebounding, Big Al's offense (efficient or not), Stone stepping in to run the show in the fourth quarter, and the Nuggets resolve to not lose another heart-breaker.
Can't say enough about Faried tonight. Some people may have thought Faried was all hype, but those people are being proved wrong each time Bounce steps onto the floor. His offense is coming along and everything else he does he does so in a relentless style. Kevin Love has been billed as the best power forward in the NBA this season and Faried out-rebounded him and the Nuggets defense forced Love to search for his offense in uncomfortable ways. After giving up a combined 91 points to
Kevin Durant and
Russell Westbrook last night, the Nuggets "held" Love to just 22 points. Still a pretty fine night for the big forward out of UCLA, but he needed 22 shots to get 22 points. Faried pulled a bit of a
Marcus Camby as he controlled the boards for Denver in the fourth and overtime and was a major factor in Denver's win.
Harrington was forced into the scorer's role once again with Miller, Lawson, Gallo, and Nene all out of the lineup down the stretch tonight. Denver's offense was very stagnant, but it somehow got the job done. Harrington started the game 0-3 from the field, scored 14 points in the second quarter off 7-10 shooting, and then shot 7-16 in the second half. Al's missed free throws tonight, 0-5, nearly cost Denver the game, but without his big second quarter the Nuggets might have never got back into this one.
Stone was thrown into a huge role and he looked pretty good. A couple turnovers and unforced errors, but he did a fine job off the pick-and-roll and initiated the Nuggets offense and played big time defense to do his part in the W. Stone had the stop of the night when he stripped Michael Beasley of the ball late and was 3-4 from the foul line in clutch situations.
Nail-biting wins over .500 teams are what things have come to in Nuggets Nation for the moment. The team was missing a starting lineups worth of players with Lawson, Miller, Fernandez, Gallo, and Nene out ... that's the team Denver has used to close games this season and none were available for the fourth quarter or overtime tonight. The Nuggets totally gutted this one out and found a way to beat a hot team, not too shabby.
Views you can use:
This was a pretty ugly win but we'll take it.
I hope Ty isn’t out for very long.

Probably the worst officiating at a game I've been to
I was able to move down to the lower level for the second half, and I could not believe the calls.
Blarch. So many bad calls. The bad call where Corey got the technical had me so upset. Or Rubio acting when Stone had the good pressure D.
Terrible.

Nobody on this team has knee problems.
Just sayin’.
love4nuggets - February 21, 2012
exactly! no one has knee problems
they should probably keep it that way. Studies show that the tight hard ankle wraps today are putting the force usually absorbed by the ankle straight to the knees thus leading to more knee injuries-

Win is a win right now..
Good for the Nuggets. Faried is really coming along. He is going to be a nice addition for the Nuggets. Big Al stepped it up when it was needed (but please make FT). Stone was great on D, but watching him run the offense was painful. This experience has to be good for him though.
The team overcame a lot of adversity and frustration tonight. Hope we get some players healthy. We need ’em. Paul and Parker back to back the next two games is gonna be tough.
If this team guts out this tough stretch, it is only gonna make ’em tougher than nails.

Never would have thought they could win with that makeshift lineup. Can’t say I think Stone has a future tho.
mesh-head - February 20, 2012
<3 Faried
Hamilton played good for a few minutes. He got a steal I think and swished a nice looking three. I was getting all excited and then he took that crazy shot where he ran away from the basket and spun around and shot a crazy fade away.
Seriously? I mean, I do that shit on the playground because I’m a retard and have no game and I’m playing with a bunch of fatties on a fucking playground. Jordan is in the NBA, what the hell was that shit?

ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown - February 21, 2012
Sorry to the Dre lovers but that man has to go
he is solely responsible for the okc loss, and could have lost this one if he didn’t get himself kicked out. I hope we move him at trade deadline.
TyLawesome - February 20, 2012
Yeah
I tend to give Andre a bit more slack than many here, but I’m pretty pissed about that sequence.
He was right, the call was BS. But he needs to understand the game situation, etc.
What did Andre do last night? Missed that game. Sorry.
Fly Agaric - February 20, 2012
during OT
he traveled on two straight pocessions. then threw a sloppy pass to harden in the worst possible time.
TyLawesome - February 20, 2012
to be fair
he was pretty awesome for the first three quarters before GK ground him into dirt. But I think it makes sense to trade him.
Rainbow skyline - February 20, 2012
Yes
Karl played him too many minutes straight. The old man lost his legs.
NugzJunkie - February 21, 2012
Three turnovers and a missed layup. All in OT
georgekarl - February 20, 2012
I'm not a big fan of Dre,
but he does a great job – most of the time – creating, 12 assists tonight?? But why he would let himself get tossed when he knew Ty was done for the game. Not smart. And down the stretch against OKC those travels and turnovers, and a tendency to jack-up 3s, just really confuse me.
He should be showing off veteran maturity, understanding the game, doing the smart things and yet he has just made some dumb, dumb decisions. There are ways that you can “think” your team to wins by doing simple things and he has not been doing that.
Jaybark7 - February 21, 2012
Maybe Dre was just tired and new he wasn't going to get any rest or timeouts.
georgekarl - February 21, 2012

TopherYork - February 21, 2012

manimal didnt box out vs memphis
Army of Nugs - February 21, 2012
sorta funny that the team does better with him on the floor
unless you say the plus minus stats are lying.
he was +15 when tossed yesterday.
as to the okc game, that one is on karl. noway dre or harrington should have played the last half of the 3rd, all the 4th and all the overtime without a break.
karl doesn’t play affalo or lawson that long without breaks, though they not as fit as andre and harrington.
utahcoyote - February 21, 2012
Dre, for all his faults, makes a positive impact
the stats don’t lie. he does tend to make some boneheaded decisions at times, but other times makes this team click.
NugzJunkie - February 21, 2012

moondoggie12 - February 20, 2012
so once again,
Al enters the game with 8 minutes left in the third and plays every minute thereafter, including overtime. I’m just at a loss over this. I realize our scoring options were very limited tonight, but why not at least give him a few minutes rest at the beginning of the fourth? A rested Bird couldn’t give us a few good minutes? Al actually did sort of ok on tired legs, hitting a few big shots, but that’s mostly because he took pretty much every one, and he missed a ton. And then there’s those free throws. Still, all the credit in the world to the guy for his performance under those circumstances. But seriously WTF is GK doing? Is there any history of him doing this? Is there any other team in history that plays guys for 25 straight minutes? Much less a 31 year-old on BACK-TO-BACK NIGHTS? Of all the weird things Karl does, this has to be the weirdest.
Rainbow skyline - February 20, 2012
Karl loves to ride the vets

I have faith in Ujiri to either fire Karl or get players that fit in Karl’s ridiculous Don Nelson system.

Was Mozgov hurt in the 2nd half?
I loved that we gave Faried so many minutes. He was great. But with MIN without their C in the second half why not go for a 5 minute stretch with Moz or Koufos and Al and Faried and create a mismatch OR give Al a break for a minute or two.
Also, no Birdman tonight? Interesting…something in the works?
I liked Mozgov attacking early on, showing a little bit of a jumper. Not often, but I think he and Koufos both deserve minutes and short-handed I don’t know why we make ourselves even more shorthanded.
Jaybark7 - February 21, 2012
Moz is still coming back from his injury
Bird has been playing hard but he is old and his knee’s are older. I’m pretty sure we were just resting him. I would rather have a 100% bird for the clippers than an a 50% bird vs the wolfs and the clips. Now watch him not play on wednesday
TopherYork - February 21, 2012
it's entirely possible he sat because he's on the block
Not uncommon for a team to do that
Zachm219 - February 21, 2012 via iPhone app
Because, TWolves playing small gave Karl an instant excuse to go small himself
NugzJunkie - February 21, 2012
Why react to what they are doing?
Why not dictate to them? Especially during the stretch when we were struggling to create offense. Make them guard your 7’0", 6’9, 6’8 guys…if they try to play them with a small line up pound it into paint.
I’m not saying it is an all the time line-up but create your own mismatches!!
Jaybark7 - February 21, 2012

So excited about that pick in the draft. The Nuggets never draft the college player I covet. Crazy how much the new FO and I think alike.
ahem
Fly Agaric - February 21, 2012
We absolutely still need Dre in that second unit
Stone should never be playing point guard. His handle is garbage. My friend and I and the people behind us would collectively groan every time he put the ball on the floor, which was a lot, because he was playing the point.
airforcefoo - February 21, 2012
He did look clumsy with the ball.
Jaybark7 - February 21, 2012
Stone? yuck
Zachm219 - February 21, 2012 via iPhone app
if you're good, there are enough minutes
This is on Karl. There are 240 total team minutes per game. Faried can be a tornado for us. Why cant we pencil him in for 20 minutes, more if some guys are down?
PS With our luck, you know we will suffer more injuries.
sgiustra - February 21, 2012
Very agree with you. Thats the big problem with the rest of the bigs
They’re usually in position, they just cant find the handle on the ball and it squirts away
newsman35 - February 21, 2012
Faried needs to hi five them before the game.

Stone on the switch
is STRAIGHT MONEY. I officially don’t mind a 5’11" starter if our back-up is 6’7"!!
love4nuggets - February 21, 2012
I am officially convinced though
that Stone is not ready to run an NBA team. He is a great defender and plays smart basketball, but you cannot have him closing games yet. He is not savvy enough or skilled enough to get the job done. But he would make a great backup!
NugzJunkie - February 21, 2012

love4nuggets - February 21, 2012

Faried is an absolute beast. The leaps in his development since training camp/pre-season are very encouraging.
If anybody else was wondering why Andersen didn’t get any burn after a few consistent positive performances, the Nuggets tweeted this…

Albafica - February 21, 2012

love4nuggets - February 21, 2012
That is kinda my thing also
I feel bad for Birdman. He should retire a Nugget. Let him be the emergency BIG.
NugzJunkie - February 21, 2012
If you are Bird
would you rather sit on the bench or go somewhere that you can play some meaningful minutes? A hint, sitting on the bench sucks.
ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown - February 21, 2012
Meh, I somewhat disagree with that article.
Andersen was already out of Karl’s rotation, collecting DNPs before Faried starting getting consistent minutes. Before Faried started seeing the court, although nothing was said, it looked like there was no place in Denver for Andersen, and some (fans) thought if he wasn’t traded, he’d be amnestied in the off-season.
With or without Faried’s energy off the bench, there’s no room for Andersen in Karl’s go-small rotation & Mozgov/Koufos being in favor with him—that was clear over the first month and a half of the season.
The ironic thing is, I actually like when Faried & Andersen play alongside each other. It’s been a small sampling, but it seems like Andersen feeds off of Faried’s energy, and both are highly active on the defensive end and boards.
NuggetsFan99 - February 21, 2012
Birdman is still effective in stretches
Say what you will, but he can still play a little. Mozgov and K2 are still very raw, also.
NugzJunkie - February 21, 2012
He had played 3 straight good games.
I never said anything negative about him; just said that it seems so long as Karl had Mozgov & Koufos, he isn’t going to give Andersen significant time regardless of how well he’s playing.
NuggetsFan99 - February 21, 2012

waterboy31321 - February 21, 2012
Ya, that was puzzling reading about his logic on rotations
It makes sense now why we are so frustrating that his rotations make zero sense…because, they don’t make any sense. He admitted it.
NugzJunkie - February 21, 2012
at the end of the game, i really don't see a bunch of people that are able to be "the man" at the end of the game.
Right now, I see Brewer, Faried and Gallo with that level of confidence (maybe its a youth thing)? Its really not there with Law, Nene or Harrington. The wild cards are Afflalo, Fernandez and Miller. We really need those guys that you feel confident enought to put the ball in their hands without them panicking.
newsman35 - February 21, 2012
We need Chauncey back
NugzJunkie - February 21, 2012

Jaybark7 - February 21, 2012

georgekarl - February 21, 2012

staggeringly bad. We observed it when he was with the nugs, but by the numbers, he is like worst-in-the-league bad.
Rainbow skyline - February 21, 2012
Afflalo
love4nuggets - February 21, 2012
Also, Karl needs to find a solid big, defensive end unit.
I suspect it should include Nene, KK, Faried, Brewer, AAA and Gallo? It still galls me that we could not stop the OKC offense at any point.
newsman35 - February 21, 2012
even
if you do stop them, KD can shoot over the top of a defender
NewEraNugg - February 21, 2012
we can definitely do better than letting both him and westbrook get 90+ points.
I’d at least expect that we keep him out of the paint and shoot contested shots on the perimeter. We can’t do either.
newsman35 - February 21, 2012
I am sorry...but we defended them both poorly
We have the guys, when healthy, to defend KD. Brewer, Gallo, and WC.
NugzJunkie - February 21, 2012
IMO Nugz, you're one third right
Brewer is too slight, Chandler too short. Gallo is our best match up against KD.
And I made point previously that if KD is going to go off there is little that Gallo could do but he could reduce KD from 51 to 40 and thats all we need.
sgiustra - February 21, 2012
I like Gallo on KD
But only in short stretches. Gallo is a good defender because of his length and lateral quickness, but neither gives him any advantage against Durant, and covering Durant is going to rack up fouls. Gallo is too valuable on offense to miss time on the court due to foul trouble.
Fly Agaric - February 21, 2012
Gallo together with Brewer and Faried.
It can’t be Birdman though…there was a play at the end where coming off a screen he switched, bit on the headfake (surprise) from beyond the three point line and gave Durant an easy drive. I know he goes for the block – always – but really he bit 25 feet from the basket??
Jaybark7 - February 21, 2012
wilson chandler is the answer to stop KD
Kenchingy - February 21, 2012
Will is our KD Stopper
One of the best perimeter defenders in the League, and he has a nice offensive game. Signing Will long term is a must.
ACEIII - February 21, 2012 via mobile
here's hoping thats true. my memory of his play against kd last year is fuzzy. how did he do then?
newsman35 - February 21, 2012
So well that the nuggets
lost the series in 5 games.
ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown - February 21, 2012
on this TIDBMTID, I agree
I dont recall Will being effective vs KD. Will would be better off on OKC’s power forward or SG. KD is too tall, Westbrook is too quick
sgiustra - February 21, 2012
I think Gallo is our best matchup on KD
only guy long enough to bother his jump shots and be able to bother him from the side/behind on drives.
ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown - February 21, 2012
yes and Gallo keeps KD occupied on defense
very important because one strategy against KD is to tire him a bit
sgiustra - February 21, 2012
I think he did good
you don’t stop a scorer from scoring…you limit him and his effectiveness.
I still think the key to beating the Thunder is limiting Westbrook. And getting a freakin body on Ibaka
NugzJunkie - February 21, 2012
Put AAA on Westbrook and Will on KD and you have shot.
As for last year’s playoffs, Niggs were in all games but one and should have one a game in OkC on a blown basket interference call.
I think we match up well with OKC if healthy and if we have Will on KD.
ACEIII - February 21, 2012 via mobile
Wow, a win
How many people here thought they would win this game after Andre got ejected? Show of hands, please. Anyone with their hand up not named SDcat is a liar, and she doesn’t count because she thinks they are going to win when they are down 20 with three seconds left.
I have no idea how they won that game, but I’ll take it. Oh, and I wish that they had Amnestied big al when they had the chance. Completely worthless. Now they’ll probably have to include Faried, Mozgov, and Lawson just to get someone to take him in a trade.
ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown - February 21, 2012
Oh and WTF
they still don’t have an inbounding play? They had to burn a timeout on one, then repeated the lakers disaster with 4.9 seconds left!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown - February 21, 2012
Dude,
it takes decades to develop an inbounding play. Maybe even centuries. I’ll let you know after I’ve been coaching this team 30 more years.
georgekarl - February 21, 2012
I did
The guy I was sitting down next to could have been a typical Stiff: hated Karl’s rotations, annoyed about some of the players, etc.
After Andre was ejected I turned to him and I said: “We got this. it’s all good.”
And he grumbled under his breath. I also told him that he shouldn’t be so grumpy because the Nuggets are still playing some decent, competitive basketball without the bulk of their starters and key rotation players.
I asked, though, and he doesn’t know about this blog.
Fly Agaric - February 21, 2012
Well, you have more confidence than me.
I about 50% believed that Andre got ejected on purpose because he was worn out. Looking back with 20-20 hindsight, would they have won that game with an exhausted Andre playing the rest of the way?
I love how fast Faried is developing. I was never a doubter, but I thought he would take a couple of seasons to develop. Never mind. At one point the timberwolves got a fast break, but the guard pulled it back rather than going for a layup. My wife said they were scared of Faried, and he wasn’t anywhere in the picture!
ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown - February 21, 2012
I love being dismissed like that. Its awesome
that being optimistic and rooting for a team gets spun into me believing we would win being down 20 points with 3 seconds left.
Thanks for tha.
Mission: 5-0…Success. Just sayin.
SDcat09 - February 21, 2012
So you didn't think they were going to win when Andre got ejected?
And since when do you not appreciate a little hyperbole? Am I going to have to get GoldenNugget back over here to show you how it’s done?
ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown - February 21, 2012
I was unsure.
I’m only used to hyperbole being directed at the team.
SDcat09 - February 21, 2012
As always
never a straight answer, never makes a choice. Ride that fence like there’s no tomorrow.
georgekarl - February 21, 2012
As always, thanks for replying :)
SDcat09 - February 21, 2012
Gosh
I was just joking.
georgekarl - February 21, 2012
And I appreciate you.
SDcat09 - February 21, 2012
SD, you just go on being SD
Thank God not everyone is a depressed moper like me. Let us wallow in our pessimistic misery. You just be you
sgiustra - February 21, 2012
Was at the game last night
That was the worst officiating I’ve ever seen at a game in person. The refs were fucking horrible. They tried their best to give the game to Minnesota but we pulled off a miracle. I was giving the business to Mark Davis. i have no clue what the guy was watching last night. The way things were going, I thought I was going to be T’d up.
Al really saved the ship form sinking in the 2ns quarter. I love Al when he is driving to the rack instead of standing out at the 3 point line jacking up shots. He played a solid game, but he has to hit his free throws
Ty hurt his ankle again. No shock there. I just think this team is cursed so far into the season.
Faried really impressed me also. If we could somehow combine Nene’s skill set and Faried’s hustle into one, we would have one helluva big man.
These injuries just suck. I wonder if we will have a full team to thow out there when we play Wednesday
TheMozgovCocktail - February 21, 2012
Can a fan get a technical?
At one of my sister’s soccer games, the ref told my step-father he was going to give my sister a yellow card if he said another word the rest of the game.
The microphones last night kept picking up people yelling at the refs last night. At one point, you can clearly see and hear the coach of the thunder “What are you looking at? They can’t do that”
ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown - February 21, 2012
Do you mean the T-Wolves coach?
I was one of them blasting the refs. I just got so fed up. I wish Karl would pull a Phil Jackson and rip the refs to the media
TheMozgovCocktail - February 21, 2012
Yes, T-wolves coach.
ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown - February 21, 2012
Rick Adelman
TheMozgovCocktail - February 21, 2012
He came close last night in his postgame presser.
Check out Koz’s page on Altitude and listen to it. Karl is right on the line.
Russscot - February 21, 2012
well he needs to cross that line
TheMozgovCocktail - February 21, 2012
well Dre haters and Stone lovers
Time to eat crow. The one good thing about Dre getting tossed (which he does need to be smarter about) was it pretty much showed Julyan Stone is not an NBA pg. the offense was completely lost with him running the show
Zachm219 - February 21, 2012 via iPhone app
plus I don't want a 6'6 point guard
and no smarty pants bring up Magic Johnson
TheMozgovCocktail - February 21, 2012
0-8 from the field
Still not time to eat crow. Plus, Stone’s defense helped more than Dre setting up shots.
Army of Nugs - February 21, 2012
I'll hold off on the crow
No one is saying Dre can’t be really good. He’s playing with an on/off switch, and it’s been off more than on for a while now.
Rainbow skyline - February 21, 2012
and Stone's FAR superior D helps make up for his offensive deficiencies.
